The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nelson throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Mercier tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Nelson is in Mercier's guard. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Nelson thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Nelson slips nicely into half guard. Nelson wants to free his trapped foot but Mercier is holding on for dear life with his legs. Mercier is trying to control Nelson's posture. Nelson takes advantage of the lull and advances to side control. He also appears to have an arm triangle here! Uh oh, big trouble for Mercier! Nelson is rotating here... this could be the end... Mercier is out! Nelson has ended this one emphatically! Great submission!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:41 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Brad Nelson!
