Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
10 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, John Meyer! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
9 - 8 - 2, fighting out of London, Manny Donkers! The judges for this bout are William Gold, Chris Edwards and Daniel Bishop.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Donkers dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Donkers tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Donkers is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Meyer takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Donkers tries to clinch but Meyer moves out of range. Donkers uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Meyer has time to react. Donkers bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Donkers misses with the combination.
Meyer fails with the takedown. Donkers clinches up with Meyer and pushes him back against the cage. A nice left hand lands by Donkers.
Donkers working some nice short punches in the clinch. Donkers misses with a body punch.
Meyer wants a takedown.
That's one minute gone in the round. Donkers swings wildly with an uppercut but Meyer uses good head movement to avoid it. Meyer drops down looking for an ankle pick but Donkers pulls his leg out and moves away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Meyer. That's going to take a lot out of him. Donkers stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Donkers wants it to stay on the feet. Donkers darts in trying to clinch enabling Meyer to counter with a crisp jab. Donkers tries to close the distance and clinch but Meyer swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Donkers wants to clinch up but Meyer keeps it at a distance. Meyer slips a jab and a cross from Donkers.
Donkers wants to clinch but Meyer slips to the side and Meyer counters with a single leg into guard. Donkers didn't expect that.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Meyer has gone for a leg lock! Donkers slips out almost immediately though and dives into Meyer's guard. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Donkers preventing the sweep. Meyer looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Donkers puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard. Meyer is looking to improve his position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Meyer looking for submissions off his back. Donkers tries to stand but can't do so whilst Meyer controls his leg. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Meyer is looking to improve his position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Meyer is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Donkers pulls his head out easily. Meyer might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Meyer is looking for a sweep. Donkers is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Meyer gets full guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Manny Donkers will probably get the nod. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Donkers lands a left and a right that send Meyer crashing to the mat, dazed. Donkers thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet! This has been an exciting period of action! Meyer dives in and grabs Donkers's left leg, looking for a takedown. Donkers pushes down on Meyer's head and hops out. Meyer shoots and misses and Donkers cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Meyer is rocked! Meyer shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Meyer was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Donkers holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Meyer tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Donkers squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.
Meyer misses with a head shot. Meyer trying to control but Donkers is having none of it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Meyer looking to ground and pound but Donkers is blocking nicely. Meyer throws a sloppy strike and Donkers uses the opportunity to reverse the position! A bit of a scramble here and Donkers has ended up in Meyer's guard.
Meyer is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Donkers rolls with it to try and escape but Meyer cranks on the arm and Donkers is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!
