Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Curtis James! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Howard Bell! The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Wesley Smith and Cecil Peabody.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Bell closes the distance and clinches. A left hand lands to the body for Bell.
Bell missing with knees to the body.
James tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Bell prevents a body shot from James. James's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button! James tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Bell smiles and moves away.
James avoids the body shot from Bell.
James fails with a takedown attempt from distance. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Curtis James. That's going to take a lot out of him. Bell lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
It looks like Curtis James has been cut. James drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Bell working for a triangle but James defends it easily.
James tries to free his leg and advance position but Bell is retaining full guard. James advances to half guard. Bell wants to improve his position but James is controlling well.
Bell is trying to control but can't.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. James prevents Bell from improving his position. James looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bell wants to improve his position but James is controlling well.
Bell looks gassed! James trying to mount his opponent but Bell defends it. James is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. James shoots for a double leg takedown but Bell sprawls well. He's pushed James's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Bell scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard. Bell closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Bell lands a nice elbow. Bell comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush. Bell lands with a left to the head. Bell lands with a light punch inside. Bell lands an elbow inside. James wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Bell lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down James. Bell scores with a hook to the body. James is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Bell pulls him back up using the underhooks. James drops down looking for an ankle pick but Bell pulls his leg out and moves away.
That's two minutes gone in the round. James closes this distance looking for a takedown but Bell circles away. James fails with the takedown. James shoots in looking for a takedown. Bell tries to sprawl out of it but James keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Bell manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. James fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Bell sprawls well initially but James persists and gets the takedown into half guard. James wants to free his trapped foot but Bell is holding on for dear life with his legs. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. James has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Bell defend it? James steps over the head and cranks it - Bell is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for James!
