PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Cross Odenkirk (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Brian Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Brian Jones was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 6 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Cross Odenkirk!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Brian Jones!
The judges for this bout are Aleksandr Martynov, Valeri Chadov and Dmitry Maklakov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Odenkirk misses with a few strikes there.
Brian Jones seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Odenkirk keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Jones.
Jones lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
A decent looking cross lands there for Jones.
Jones dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Jones scores with a jab to the head.
Jones throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Jones lands a nice looking body shot.

Odenkirk lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Jones circles away quickly and effectively.
Jones scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
Jones throws a right and a left that both miss.
Odenkirk misses with a double jab.
Odenkirk throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
letting Jones counter with a right hand.
Jones goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
Jones fails to land with a series of punches.

Jones misses with a few strikes there.
Jones tries to land a leg kick but Odenkirk saw it coming and moves away.
A slow jab from Jones misses its intended target.
Jones feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Odenkirks jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Odenkirk fails in his attempt to clinch.
Jones doesn't manage to clinch there - Odenkirk circles away.

Jones scores with a hook.
Jones lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Odenkirk circles away quickly and effectively.
Jones misses with a hook
and Odenkirk counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Jones connects with a single shot there.

Jones scores with a takedown into Odenkirk's guard.
Odenkirk avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Odenkirk knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Jones on the ground.

Jones working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Jones throws an elbow that misses. Odenkirk uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Jones's guard. Nice move by Odenkirk!

Odenkirk has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Jones scores with a jab to the body.
Jones sizes up Odenkirk with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
Jones throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Odenkirk sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Odenkirk walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Odenkirk fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Jones is out of range.

Jones fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
Jones has his takedown stuffed
and Odenkirk counters with a one-two to the body.
Odenkirk needs to keep his hands up - Jones had a free shot at his head there.
Jones uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

A jab from Jones does it's job there.
Odenkirk bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Jones looks to land a right hand but Odenkirk moved out of range.
Odenkirk is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Jones throws out a loose jab but Odenkirk uses good head movement to avoid it.

Odenkirk has managed to clinch.
Odenkirk can't break the clinch.
Jones stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body.
Odenkirk has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Jones avoiding damage as Odenkirk throws knees to the body.
Odenkirk wants to break free but Jones has control.
Jones is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Odenkirk is defending well.
Jones wants to take the fight to the mat but Odenkirk manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

Jones moves into full mount! Odenkirk won't be happy about that!
Jones throws some wild stikes that Odenkirk manages to avoid easily.
Odenkirk wants to hold on but Jones pushes him away.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Jones wants to control the pace but Odenkirk is squirming around nicely.

Brian Jones showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Jones doesn't manage to clinch there - Odenkirk circles away.
Jones shoots in looking for a takedown but Odenkirk manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Jones's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Odenkirk wants to clinch.
Jones tries a head kick but it misses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jones jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.

Odenkirk takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Jones lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Jones lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

Odenkirk misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Jones.
Odenkirk is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.

Jones has Odenkirk pressed against the cage, preventing Odenkirk from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Odenkirk tries to work over Jones's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.

Odenkirk's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Brian Jones seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Jones shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Odenkirk sprawls well. Odenkirk wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Jones gets slowly back to his feet.

Jones might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.

Odenkirk on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.

Jones throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Odenkirk on the side of the head.

Odenkirk looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that.

Jones throws a right and a left that Odenkirk avoids nicely.
Jones has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Odenkirk moves into the clinch.
Odenkirk tries to work over Jones's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Odenkirk tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Jones's elbow.

Odenkirk is pressed up against the cage. Jones has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Odenkirk down to the mat. Odenkirk avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Odenkirk tries to clinch but Jones is having none of it.
Jones throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Jones fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Odenkirk throws a series of punches but Jones avoids them all with ease.
Odenkirk takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Brian Jones dominated that fourth round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Odenkirk lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Jones backs up against the cage.
Jones scores with a crisp jab that stopped Odenkirk in his tracks.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Odenkirk unloads a knee to the mid-section. Jones lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Odenkirk swings wildly with an uppercut but Jones uses good head movement to avoid it.
Jones is looking for a takedown.

Jones is working for takedown but Odenkirk is calmly controlling the position for now.
Odenkirk wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Jones has him pressed against the cage.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Odenkirk takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

Jones goes for a takedown attempt but Odenkirk pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

and Odenkirk counters with a big head kick but Jones shrugs it off.
Jones tries to close the distance and clinch up but Odenkirk swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Jones rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Odenkirk moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Jones paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.

Jones misses with a takedown

and Odenkirk counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Odenkirk.
Brian Jones is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Odenkirk manages to break the clinch.
Jones slips a jab and a cross from Odenkirk.
Jones shoots in for a double leg but Odenkirk sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Jones has Odenkirk up against the cage in a clinch.

Jones blocks an uppercut.

Jones has hold of one of Odenkirk's legs. Odenkirk is fighting the takedown attempt but Jones gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

Odenkirk pushes Jones off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Odenkirk doesn't manage to clinch there - Jones circles away.
Cross Odenkirk has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
