PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Paulo Kalawakan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matt Cota (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Paulo Kalawakan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Matt Cota!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Shigeki Fujiwara and Tatsuya Matsuyama.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A leg kick checked by Kalawakan.
Kalawakan looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!
A bone on bone clash there as Kalawakan blocks the leg kick.
Kalawakan scores with a punch to the head.
Kalawakan misses with a hook. Cota ducked under it nicely.

Cota scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Cota advances to mount.
Cota controlling his opponent.

That's one minute gone in the round.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Matt Cota hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Cota misses with a body shot.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Cota attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
Cota misses the shot to the body.
Cota throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Kalawakan gets caught flat footed, as Cota shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Cota slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Cota's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Matt Cota was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Cota ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Kalawakan moves away.
Good work by Kalawakan as he checks the leg kick.

Cota closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Cota lands in his opponent's guard.

Cota is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Cota is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Cota slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Cota just content to control the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matt Cota dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Cota misses the shot to the body.
Cota is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Kalawakan rather than just go for the knockout.
Kalawakan throws a sloppy head kick and Cota moves out of range easily.

Cota throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Kalawakan tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Cota is in Kalawakan's guard.
Cota postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Cota controlling from the top position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Kalawakan can't keep his opponent in guard - Cota advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Cota passes to full mount!
Cota controlling his opponent.
Kalawakan knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Cota on the ground.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Cota looking to isolate an arm here. Kalawakan doesn't see it coming and as Cota extends the arm, he's forced to tap out! Nice submission by Cota!
