PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Average Joe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dustin Spence (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Joe is coming into this fight with a significant injury, which will no doubt have an effect on his cardio. Average Joe has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Average Joe!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Dustin Spence!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Robert Twigg and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Spence shoots and misses
and Joe counters with a nice uppercut.
Joe is breathing heavily.
Spence punishes Joe's body with a nice straight punch.

Spence looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Joe!
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Spence wants to control the pace but Joe is squirming around nicely.
Spence controlling the pace for now.

Spence breaks from Joe's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Joe is squirming around, avoiding Spence's attempts to control the action.
Spence lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Joe hang on?
Spence trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Spence landing strikes, looking to finish!
Spence has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Spence controlling the pace for now.
Joe is desperately trying to improve his position but Spence has a good base and remains in mount.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee warns Joe that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Spence is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Joe can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
A nice elbow there by Spence.

Joe is rocked!
Spence landing strikes from the mount and Joe is in trouble!
Oh Joe is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Spence cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Spence takes his opponent's back. Perhaps a chance to lock up a rear naked choke here.
Spence softening up his opponent with strikes here.

Spence looking for the choke but no joy.
I would not like to be Joe right now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dustin Spence dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Spence fails in his attempt to clinch.
Joe seems to have got his legs back now.
Spence darts in trying to clinch

and Joe counters with a nice double leg into side control. Spence won't be happy with that.
Joe working away.
Spence gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Spence is trying to control but can't.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Joe throwing shots but Spence is blocking nicely.

Spence pushes Joe off and gets back to his feet.

Spence closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Joe did well to prevent Spence getting side control.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Spence connects with a nice short shot to Joe's temple.
Spence is trying to control the action in half guard but Joe is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Spence is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Joe is just riding it out for now. Spence eventually gives up the hold.
Spence content to control rather than advance.

Joe is not content to let Spence control the position.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Spence takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Spence trying to control from half guard but Joe is working away.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Dustin Spence was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Spence doesn't manage to clinch there - Joe circles away.
Spence shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Joe as he jumps to the side.

Spence shoots in and gets a takedown into Joe's guard.
Dustin Spence has got the better of the ground game so far.
Spence looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

Spence prevents Joe from getting back to his feet.
Spence trying to control the position from guard on top but Joe is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Dustin Spence has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Spence will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dustin Spence showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Spence with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Spence misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Spence shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Spence fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Average Joe has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dustin Spence.
Spence tries a head kick but it misses.
Dustin Spence seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Horrible takedown by Spence or perhaps it was just good defense by Joe which made him look bad.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Spence looks to clinch
and Joe counters with a nice low kick that buckles Spence's knee momentarily.
Spence looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Dustin Spence is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Spence misses with a takedown
and Joe counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Joe tries for a takedown but Spence sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Spence tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Spence is defended easily by Joe.
Joe shoots for a double leg takedown but Spence sprawls well. He's pushed Joe's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Spence will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Spence shoots in for a takedown but Joe shows good takedown defense.
Spence tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Joe counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Joe stands and throws Spence's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Joe tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

Joe wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Spence, who protects the arm well.

Joe lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Spence manages to work his way to half guard, despite Joe's best efforts.
Spence won't allow Joe to pass to mount.
Spence trying to control from the bottom.
Spence is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Spence controlling the leg, holding on to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Joe tries to pass the half guard into mount. Spence knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Spence is doing well to control the position and prevent Joe from advancing to side control.

Dustin Spence has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Spence dives in and scores a takedown into Joe's guard.
Spence keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Joe's head.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Spence gets to his feet. Joe looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Dustin Spence.
Well Spence has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
