PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Waqas Malik (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Clay Thomas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Malik might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to The Final Countdown. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Lou da Vinci and Dean Styles.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Thomas fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Malik tries to clinch up.

Thomas is looking to advance position but Malik won't allow it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Malik is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Thomas pulls his head out easily.

Thomas is looking for a kimura but Malik is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Thomas to get the leverage.

Thomas is taking a breather. Malik says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Thomas's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Clay Thomas was stalling too much, according to the referee.
The crowd cheers as Thomas lands an impressive looking overhand right. Malik doesn't seem phased though.

Malik avoids the head kick by Thomas.

Thomas rushes Malik and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Malik is trying to break the clinch but Thomas is controlling him.

Thomas shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Malik as he jumps to the side.
Waqas Malik has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Clay Thomas.
Thomas looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Malik throws a head kick that misses.
Thomas swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Malik counters with a three punch combo that has Thomas backing up. Thomas nods at Malik to acknowledge the strikes.

Malik uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Thomas.
Thomas tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Malik paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Malik throws a jab when Thomas was well out of range.
Thomas throws a body kick that misses.
Malik throws a jab but it's blocked by Thomas.
Malik thuds his right hand into Thomas's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Thomas throws a body punch but Malik moves out of range.

Thomas shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Malik napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Malik tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Thomas wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Thomas throws a hook to the side of Malik's head but Malik sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Malik stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Malik wants it to stay on the feet.

Thomas darts in and clinches Malik up against the cage.

Thomas breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Thomas throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Thomas ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Thomas changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Malik tries to avoid it but Thomas manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Malik to the ground. Malik escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Clay Thomas seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Thomas tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Thomas instigates a clinch.
Thomas lands a body punch in the clinch.
Malik tries to land a knee to the head but Thomas blocks with his arms.

Thomas pulls guard effortlessly.

Thomas escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Malik gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Malik drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Thomas manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Malik has Thomas in his guard.
Thomas not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Thomas postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Malik has his foot on Thomas's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Thomas works his way back into a safe position though.

Thomas is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
