Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 2 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Pete Donovan! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Andrew Clarke! The judges for this bout are Tatsuya Matsuyama, Taro Takaoka and Shigeki Fujiwara.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Clarke throws out a loose jab but Donovan uses good head movement to avoid it. A swing and a miss from Clarke. Donovan ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Clarke moves away. Donovan works Clarke's body with a nice hook. Donovan connects with a nice looking jab.
Donovan connects with a solid leg kick. The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Clarke checks a leg kick. Clarke throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Donovan sees it coming and avoids it easily. Clarke blocks a low kick nicely. Clarke misses with an uppercut
and Clarke takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Donovan tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Clarke was well out of range. Poor timing from Donovan. Donovan scores with a hook to the body. Clarke takes a step back and tries to catch his breath. Clarke jabbing away but nothing is landing. Donovan digs a good body shot into Clarke's ribs. The crowd cheers as Donovan lands an impressive looking overhand right. Clarke doesn't seem phased though.
That's one minute gone in the round. Donovan lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Clarke ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Donovan moves away. Donovan throws a nice outside leg kick. Donovan throws a body punch but Clarke moves out of range. A slapping leg kick lands for Donovan.
Pete Donovan is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Donovan connects with the punch. A looping hook to the body misses from Clarke. Donovan does a little dance to reset his feet. A nice leg kick lands there from Donovan. Donovan keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Clarke blocks a head kick by Donovan.
Donovan lands a nice shot to the body.
Donovan tries to land a leg kick but Clarke saw it coming and moves away.
Donovan throws a wild body kick that Clarke sees coming a mile off.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A shot to the liver by Clarke. Beautiful body shot. Donovan is looking to slow Clarke down with leg kicks. This has been an exciting period of action! A good leg kick by Donovan. Donovan closes the distance and clinches. Donovan breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Donovan ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent. Clarke throws a jab when Donovan was well out of range. Donovan cracks the inside of Clarke's front leg. Clarke thows a left - swing and a miss! Clarke closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. Clarke throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage. Donovan on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Donovan is not content to let Clarke control the position. Clarke wants to control for a moment but Donovan uses the opportunity to move back to half guard. Clarke trying to mount his opponent but Donovan defends it.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Clarke seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Clarke trying to control the action but Donovan is working from the bottom. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's five minutes gone in the round.
The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Andrew Clarke. Clarke ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. Clarke misses with a wild body shot. Clarke thows a body shot but no joy. Clarke misses the shot to the body. Clarke pushing out the jab but it's not landing. Clarke gets the takedown into side control. Donovan managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Clarke.
Donovan is looking for a sweep. Donovan defending against the ground and pound. Donovan on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Donovan tries to get out of the position.
That's six minutes gone in the round. Clarke works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head. Donovan is not content to let Clarke control the position. Clarke is working Donovan over with some ground and pound from side control. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Donovan on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. Donovan is not content to let Clarke control the position. Sloppy strikes there by Clarke. Clarke tries to advance position but instead Donovan slips a leg back in to half guard. Donovan pushes Clarke off looking to stand but Clarke dives back in and keeps control.
That's eight minutes gone in the round. Clarke is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen. Clarke lands strikes from half guard. Clarke not landing any meaningful shots this time.
That's nine minutes gone in the round. Clarke throwing shots but Donovan is blocking nicely. Clarke takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. Clarke trying to control the pace. Clarke thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Donovan's head. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Andrew Clarke dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!
Clarke misses with an uppercut. Donovan saw that one coming. Donovan bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. A telegraphed right hand from Clarke misses the target. Clarke jabbing away but nothing is landing. Pete Donovan seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Donovan fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Clarke. Donovan is looking to wear down Clarke with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment. Donovan scores with a nice right hand.
Clarke misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Donovan.
Clarke thows a body shot but no joy. Clarke misses with a wild body shot. Donovan lands a nice looking body shot.
A looping hook to the body misses from Donovan. Clarke does a little dance to reset his feet. Clarke's leg has a nasty welt from taking a succession of leg kicks. That must be slowing him down. Donovan looks to score with a jab to the body but Clarke is just out of range. Clarke looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Donovan!
That's one minute gone in the round. Clarke looking to control and managing it successfully. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Clarke throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Donovan is bucking up trying to escape but Clarke cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Clarke looking to control but Donovan is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Donovan holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Clarke tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Clarke thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Clarke lands with some strikes.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Clarke thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage. Donovan takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position. Clarke looking to finish Donovan with some ground and pound. This is bad for Donovan! Clarke with the ground and pound from mount. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Clarke lands a big shot there that rocks Donovan but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Donovan is rocked! Clarke takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Clarke sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it! We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Clarke controlling his opponent. Clarke looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Clarke lands a big shot there that rocks Donovan but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Oh Donovan is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Clarke throws a sloppy strike and Donovan uses the opportunity to reverse the position! A bit of a scramble here and Donovan has ended up in Clarke's guard.
Donovan seems to have got his legs back now. Andrew Clarke has got the better of the ground game so far. Clarke looking to hit a scissor sweep but Donovan is one step ahead there. Donovan wanted to stand there but Clarke had control of the position.
That's six minutes gone in the round. Donovan being controlled here momentarily. Clarke has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Clarke bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Donovan's guard. Donovan has momentary wrist control but Clarke slips an elbow through the middle. Clarke prevents Donovan from getting back to his feet.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. Donovan avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Donovan keeping moving, preventing Clarke from controlling successfully. Clarke trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Donovan throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Clarke shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard. Clarke missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
That's eight minutes gone in the round. Clarke working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that. Clarke trying to pass the guard but Donovan defending well. Donovan wants to get back to full guard.
That's nine minutes gone in the round. Clarke thows a huge punch but Donovan dodges it nicely.
Donovan wants to get back to his feet. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Donovan is refusing to be controlled, as Clarke sits in half guard.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Pete Donovan wasn't doing enough on the ground. Donovan avoids a lazy jab quite easily. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Clarke avoids a low kick by using good footwork. Donovan scores with a slapping inside leg kick. Pete Donovan has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Andrew Clarke is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Donovan throws a hook to the side of Clarke's head but Clarke sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
And that's the end of the fight! Andrew Clarke comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. I think Clarke has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
