Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Aaron Gracie! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Wanderlei Rua! The judges for this bout are Taro Takaoka, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Yukihiro Shimada.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gracie fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Rua misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Gracie.
A combination from Rua does no damage. Rua tries to clinch but Gracie is having none of it. Rua tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Gracie swats away the attempt to clinch by Rua. Rua looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. Wanderlei Rua seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Gracie keeps the fight on the outside. Rua forces Gracie back against the ropes and clinches. Rua manages to break the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gracie feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Gracie tries to free his leg and advance position but Rua is retaining full guard. Rua working for a triangle but Gracie defends it easily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gracie drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Rua dives on top into guard. Rua preventing the sweep. Rua wants to pass the guard but Gracie is keeping the position. Rua stands and steps away. Gracie gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game. Rua has taken the fight to the clinch.

Rua wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Gracie has him pressed against the ropes. Rua escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gracie closes this distance looking for a takedown but Rua circles away. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Aaron Gracie. That's going to take a lot out of him. Rua misses with a double jab.

Rua looks to score with a jab to the body but Gracie is just out of range. A punch combination from Rua misses. Rua fails to land with a series of punches.

Gracie shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Rua but Rua pushes him off and we're back to square one. Gracie ducks under a wild hook from Rua. Gracie avoids the body shot from Rua.
Rua misses with a jab, cross combination.
Rua throws a right and a left that Gracie avoids nicely. Rua looks gassed! Rua swings for the body but Gracie moves out of range.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Rua stuffs the takedown. Rua tries to clinch up but Gracie circles away and keeps his distance. Gracie fails with the takedown. Gracie moves away from the strike by Rua. Gracie scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Gracie works his foot free and advances to mount. Gracie jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Rua is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Rua and Gracie has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Rua wants to get back to his feet but Gracie drags him back down. Gracie is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Rua has escaped the position, nice work there. Rua wants to control but Gracie postures up.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Gracie is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Rua is trying to escape and Gracie transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Rua is forced to tap! Nice work there by Gracie! Very nice indeed!
