PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jim Carlo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Benigno Aquino (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jim Carlo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Benigno Aquino!
The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, Bruno Hogan and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Carlo displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Aquino throws out the jab.
Carlo avoids a punch combination nicely.
Aquino misses with a body kick.
Carlo looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Aquino is fending him off so far but Carlo persists. Nope, Aquino circles away and we're back to standing.

letting Carlo counter with a right hand.
Carlo fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Aquino avoids it really well and circles away.
Aquino lands with a shot to the body.

Aquino pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Aquino throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Benigno Aquino seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Carlo avoids a punch combination nicely.

Aquino stuffs the takedown attempt from Carlo. Carlo gets slowly back to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jim Carlo. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Aquino misses with a series of wild punches.
Carlo lands a glancing blow to the side of Aquino's head.
Aquino throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Carlo cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Carlo tries for a takedown but Aquino sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Carlo rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Aquino moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Aquino takes a swing at Carlo's ribcage but misses.
Aquino leaves Carlo with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Aquino stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Aquino wants it to stay on the feet.
Aquino avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

Aquino misses with a series of wild punches.
Nice cross by Carlo.
Aquino misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Carlo misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Carlo avoids the head kick by Aquino.
Aquino will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

and Carlo decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Aquino's guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Carlo pushes down on Aquino's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Carlo is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Carlo looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Aquino is looking to escape.
Aquino is in trouble now - Carlo has advanced to mount!
Aquino wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Carlo.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Aquino is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Carlo prevents Aquino from getting the reversal.

Carlo sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Aquino defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Carlo.

Carlo has control of Aquino's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Aquino regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Carlo is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Aquino has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Carlo trying to control but Aquino is having none of it.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Aquino tries to buck Carlo off but he can't manage it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Carlo shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Aquino pinned against the cage. Aquino gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Aquino takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.


It looks like Jim Carlo has been cut.
Carlo uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Aquino.

Aquino lands a jab followed by a vicious hook that sends Carlo sprawling to the canvas. Aquino follows him down, looking for the kill. Can Carlo hang on?

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Aquino connects with a nice short shot to Carlo's temple.
Oh Carlo is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Aquino lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Aquino lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Carlo is defending against the submission attempts here by Aquino.
Carlo seems to have got his legs back now.

Aquino thows a huge punch but Carlo dodges it nicely.
Aquino is nestled in close to Carlo, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Aquino working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Aquino is just content to waste time from the top position. Carlo takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Aquino must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Aquino got a little sloppy there for a moment and Carlo has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Aquino has managed to get both his arms back between Carlo's legs - danger averted.

Carlo lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Aquino!
Aquino tries to lock up and control but Carlo gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Aquino is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Carlo cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Carlo pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

Aquino is bucking up trying to escape but Carlo cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

Carlo jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Aquino is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Aquino and Carlo has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

Carlo is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Aquino knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Benigno Aquino showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Aquino closes this distance looking for a takedown but Carlo circles away.

Aquino is looking to stand up but Carlo isn't so interested in that idea.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Carlo drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Carlo jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Carlo is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Aquino doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Carlo.

Carlo thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Aquino's head.

Aquino is looking for a sweep. Carlo is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Aquino pushes Carlo off looking to stand but Carlo dives back in and keeps control.

Aquino has one foot on Carlo's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
Carlo fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Horrible takedown by Carlo or perhaps it was just good defense by Aquino which made him look bad.
A punch combination from Aquino misses.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Aquino lands with an uppercut that bounces Carlo off the cage and back into range.

Carlo throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Aquino tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Carlo is in Aquino's guard.
