PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Via Dios (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ted Coke (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Dios's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Sandstorm. Coke is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Cocaine. Ted Coke told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Via Dios!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ted Coke!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Coke lands a nice hook to Dios's body. Dios takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Dios slips a straight right by Coke.

Coke has closed the distance and engaged Dios in a clinch.
Coke lands a body shot.

Coke escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Dios lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Coke circles away quickly and effectively.
Dios closes the distance and clinches up with Coke, looking for a takedown. Dios pushes Coke against the cage but Coke circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Coke throws out a powerful jab.
A punch combination from Dios misses.
Via Dios seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Dios.
Dios throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Dios throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Coke.
Dios throws a leg kick that misses.
Dios shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Coke eats them both and turns towards Dios to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Coke cracks Dios with an open hand slap.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Dios throws a sloppy head kick and Coke moves out of range easily.
Coke throws an overhand right that lands on Dios's shoulder, as Dios tries to avoid the shot.
Dios throws a head kick that misses.
Dios misses the shot to the body.

Coke moves into the clinch.
Dios trying to land knees to the body.
Dios really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Dios lands with a light punch inside.
Dios struggles to land a body shot inside as Coke controls his hands.
Dios takes a shot to the head.
Coke working hard to break the clinch.

Coke tightens his grip and picks Dios up, before dumping him to the ground. Dios manages to land in guard.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Dios wants to sweep here but Coke controlling him for the moment.
Coke wants to pass the guard but Dios is keeping the position.
Coke must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Coke throwing strikes from guard but Dios blocks nicely.

Dios has control of Coke's left arm, preventing Coke from doing any damage.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

OK we're going to have a standup here. Ted Coke hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Coke looks to score with a jab to the body but Dios is just out of range.

Coke changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Coke dodges the punch combination from Dios.
Coke throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Dios on the side of the head.
Dios misses with a two punch combination.
Coke takes one on the button.

Coke clinches.

Coke manages to break the clinch.

Dios looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Dios wants to control from the top but Coke keeps moving.
Coke wants to stand and escape but Dios is having none of it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Coke avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Dios prevents Coke from getting back to his feet.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Dios throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Coke works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Coke is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Dios working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Coke's head.
Dios has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Dios throws an elbow that misses. Coke uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Dios's guard. Nice move by Coke!

Dios is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Ted Coke will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Dios shoots in but no luck this time.
Dios looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Coke is fending him off so far but Dios persists. Nope, Coke circles away and we're back to standing.
Dios misses with a hook
and Coke counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Dios thinking.
Nice sprawl there from Coke as Dios shoots in.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Via Dios. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Coke fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Dios on the side of the head.
Coke throws out a powerful jab.
Dios lands with a hook. Coke tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.

Coke gets a clinch.
Dios throws a punch but it's blocked by Coke.

Coke turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Coke manages to end up in side control.
Coke staying calm.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Dios struggling a bit here.

Coke trying to control the action but Dios is working from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Coke working away.

Coke tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Coke has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Dios sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.

Dios is looking for a sweep. Coke is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Dios trying to control but Coke postures up.

Coke gets to his feet - back to striking we go!
Dios drops his hands momentarily and Coke takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Dios is looking to clinch but Coke is avoiding it.
Coke avoids a punch combination nicely.
Dios misses with a hook. Coke ducked under it nicely.
Coke clobbers Dios with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Coke throws a hook but Dios avoids it easily.

Coke moves out of range as Dios strikes.
Coke misses with a wild body shot.
Coke takes a swing at Dios's ribcage but misses.
Dios throws a right hand that misses
and Coke counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Dios looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Coke is fending him off so far but Dios persists. Nope, Coke circles away and we're back to standing.
Coke lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
Coke cracks Dios with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
Via Dios is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Dios just misses with a punch to the body.
Dios fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Dios throws a body punch but Coke moves out of range.
Dios misses with a body shot.
Dios uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Coke.

Coke looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Dios can't keep his opponent in guard - Coke advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Coke is taking a breather. Dios says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Dios looking for submissions off his back.
Coke is looking to take a break and control but Dios is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Coke missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ted Coke showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Coke rushes Dios and presses him up against the cage.
Coke is trying to push Dios away but Dios has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Coke lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Coke is trying to control. Dios wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Dios wants to improve his position but Coke is controlling well.
Ted Coke has got the better of the ground game so far.
The fighters are battling for position here. Dios manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Dios avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Dios keeping moving, preventing Coke from controlling successfully.
Coke wants to stand but Dios is controlling his posture from full guard.

Coke sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Dios's guard.
Dios works his way to full guard. Good work.

Dios has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Coke can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Dios will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Coke stands up from Dios's guard - Coke perhaps looking for a knockout.
Coke lands with a nice body punch.

Dios lands with a thumping leg kick.

Coke takes the fight into the clinch.
Dios has Coke pushed against the cage.

Coke escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Coke rushes Dios and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Coke breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Dios drives through with a takedown into guard.
Dios in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Coke really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Dios. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Dios won't allow Coke to get back to his feet.
Dios missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Coke can do anything to dispel that myth.
Coke wants to stand up but Dios is controlling him.

Coke takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Dios throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Ted Coke is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Dios wants to control from the top but Coke keeps moving.
Dios in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Dios trying to control the position from guard on top but Coke is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Dios slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Dios wants to control from the top but Coke keeps moving.

We're going to have a standup here because Via Dios wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Dios shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Coke as he jumps to the side.

Coke gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Coke wants to break the clinch but can't.
Via Dios has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Dios content to slow the pace in the clinch.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
A frustrated look appears on Coke's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Coke on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Ted Coke.
Well Coke has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
