Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Frank Mir! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Pauli Pikkarainen! The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Tarja Halkonen and Marco Blurström.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mir lands with a good body shot. Mir tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Pikkarainen was well out of range. Poor timing from Mir. Pikkarainen manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Mir on his heels. He'll look to pass Mir's guard now, I'm sure. Mir looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Mir is looking for a triangle but Pikkarainen pushes his legs off easily.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Pikkarainen drops back looking for a leg! Mir is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Mir manages to kick Pikkarainen off! Pikkarainen jumps back into Mir's guard. Mir wants to sweep here but Pikkarainen controlling him for the moment. Mir is looking to stand up but Pikkarainen isn't so interested in that idea. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Pikkarainen looking to pass the guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mir tries to land a sweep but no joy. Mir is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Pikkarainen defends well. Mir keeping full guard, as Pikkarainen tries to pass. Mir has his foot on Pikkarainen's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Pikkarainen works his way back into a safe position though. Pikkarainenis looking to pass into half guard but Mir pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Mir is in guard. Mir slips nicely into half guard. Pikkarainen is looking to improve his position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mir is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Pikkarainen defends it well. Mir wants to lay and pray for a moment but Pikkarainen keeps working. Mir is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Pikkarainen has managed to free his arm - good work. This has been an exciting period of action! Mir is controlling the pace.
Pikkarainen is staying active underneath Mir, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mir prevents Pikkarainen from improving his position. Mir is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Mir is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Pikkarainen gets full guard. Mir might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Mir being controlled here momentarily. Pikkarainen wants to sweep here but Mir controlling him for the moment.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Mir trying to control the position from guard on top but Pikkarainen is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Pikkarainen wants to sweep here but Mir controlling him for the moment. Mir wants to pass the guard but Pikkarainen is keeping the position. Pikkarainen seems keen to control Mir's posture. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Mir wants to control from the top but Pikkarainen keeps moving.
Frank Mir has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet. Pikkarainen closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Frank Mir dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
Mir throws a leg kick but Pikkarainen sees it coming and checks it nicely. Frank Mir seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Excellent takedown into side control there by Pikkarainen. Mir wants to control but Pikkarainen postures up. Mir gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there! Mir working to try and regain half guard.
Mir is working hard here to advance position. Mir defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Pikkarainen. Mir wants to control but Pikkarainen is having none of it. Mir bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
That's one minute gone in the round. Pikkarainen is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Mir not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Mir wants to pass the guard but Pikkarainen is keeping the position. Pikkarainen trying to control the position.
Mir trying to control but Pikkarainen is working from the bottom. Frank Mir overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Pauli Pikkarainen was stalling too much, according to the referee. Pikkarainen checks a leg kick nicely.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Pikkarainen closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Pikkarainen lands in his opponent's guard. Pikkarainen is breathing heavily. Pikkarainen is posturing up here but Mir has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Pikkarainen tries to roll out but it's too tight and Pikkarainen has to tap! Slick submission there by Mir!
