Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, J.P. Damphousse! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mike Shields! The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, Jonathan Paton and Steve Montenegro.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Damphousse avoids a kick to the body.
Damphousse avoids the body shot from Shields.
Shields throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Damphousse's head. Shields swings widly with a right hand
and Damphousse counters with a nice body shot. Damphousse blocks the body kick.
Damphousse gets a clinch. A bit of stalling here from Shields.
Shields wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee. Shields breaks the clinch.
Shields fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Damphousse.
That's one minute gone in the round. Shields checks a leg kick. Damphousse connects with a leg kick. Shields looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it. Shields doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body. Mike Shields is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Sloppy strikes from Shields. Those never looked like landing. Damphousse fails with a takedown attempt. Shields pulls out of a head kick attempt.

A jab lands there for Shields. Shields blocks a low kick nicely. Damphousse avoids the body shot from Shields.
Shields throws a front kick that sends Damphousse stumbling back into the cage. Damphousse throws a low kick, looking for Shields's leg but Shields calmly moves out of range. Damphousse wants to clinch. Shields misses with an uppercut
and Damphousse counters with a takedown into side control. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Damphousse working the ground and pound but Shields is defending the strikes.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Damphousse looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Damphousse wants to control but Shields is keeping him busy. Damphousse taking a breather here. I wouldn't like to be where Shields is right now.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Damphousse working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Damphousse throws an elbow but Shields slips to the side and avoids it well. Damphousse throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Shields struggling a bit here. Damphousse trying to control the position but Shields is working away. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Damphousse walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Shields checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side. Shields misses with a body kick. Shields lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Damphousse circles away quickly and effectively. Shields tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. A head kick misses from Shields. Damphousse doesn't manage to clinch there - Shields circles away.
Shields checks a leg kick. Shields looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it. Shields throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
That's one minute gone in the round. Damphousse attempts a low kick but it misses it's target. Damphousse doesn't manage to clinch there - Shields circles away.
Shields looks to land a right hand but Damphousse moved out of range. Shields avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Mike Shields seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Shields keeps Damphousse at a distance using the push kick. Damphousse lands a right hook to the body.
Shields circles away from the clinch attempt and Shields counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Damphousse thinking.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Shields misses the jab. Shields checks a leg kick. Shields throws a head kick that misses. Damphousse gets a double leg takedown into Shields's guard. Damphousse trying to control the position from guard on top but Shields is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Shields trying to keep a closed guard but Damphousse is proving a slippery customer.
Shields can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Damphousse controls the pace.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Damphousse works a leg free and moves into half guard. Damphousse looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Damphousse is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

That's four minutes gone in the round. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Damphousse stalling. Damphousse seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Shields for as long as he can get away with. Shields blocking the ground and pound attempt from Damphousse. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Damphousse takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
J.P. Damphousse dominated that second round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Shields. Shields will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Shields throws a body kick that misses. Damphousse takes a kick to the side of the head. Damphousse throws a body punch but Shields moves out of range. Damphousse throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land. Shields fails to land with a series of punches.
Damphousse fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Shields is out of range. Shields keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
That's one minute gone in the round. Shields throws a hook but Damphousse blocks it. Shields misses with a wild body shot. Damphousse shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down. Mike Shields seems to be getting the better of the standup. An inside leg kick from Shields misses. Damphousse staying out of range there. Shields looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Shields throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Damphousse moves in looking to clinch but Shields pushes him off. Damphousse fails in his attempt to clinch.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Shields keeps the fight on the outside. Shields scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business. Damphousse throws a front kick aimed at Shields's knee but Shields avoids it well. Shields keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
Damphousse feints and as Shields raises his hands in defense, Damphousse changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Damphousse looking to pass the guard. Shields keeping moving, preventing Damphousse from controlling successfully. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Shields can do anything to dispel that myth.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Damphousse sitting in guard here, content to control. J.P. Damphousse overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
We're going to have a standup here because J.P. Damphousse wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Shields fails to land with a series of punches.
J.P. Damphousse is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Damphousse closes this distance looking for a takedown but Shields circles away. Shields lands with a kick to the ribs.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Damphousse throws a leg kick but Shields moved away. Shields listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut. Damphousse swings away with a leg kick that misses. Damphousse pivots, looking for a leg kick but Shields is out of range and Damphousse settles back down. Damphousse throws a low kick but Shields moves out of range easily. Damphousse dodges the punch combination from Shields.
Damphousse wants to clinch up but Shields keeps it at a distance. Mike Shields has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Shields scores with a push kick.
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to J.P. Damphousse. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Damphousse, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent.
