Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kimmo Ojala! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mitch Hughes! The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Jonathan Paton and Joseph Jones.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ojala misses with a few strikes there.
Kimmo Ojala seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Hughes shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Hughes is looking to work some ground and pound but Ojala has wrist control. Hughes is in close to Ojala's body, working some short punches and elbows. Ojala wants to stand up but Hughes is controlling him. Hughes lands a couple of digs. Hughes looking to pass the guard. Hughes wants to control from the top but Ojala keeps moving. Hughes passes easily into side control. Nice work. Ojala tries to escape but Hughes is in control. Ojala is breathing heavily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ojala parries the strikes from Hughes easily there. Hughes is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Ojala to escape.
Hughes cracks Ojala with a big elbow. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Hughes is looking to take a break and control but Ojala is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Hughes throws a strike aimed at the side of Ojala's head but Ojala avoids it well. Ojala is not content to let Hughes control the position. Hughes tries to advance to mount but can't.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Hughes working the ground and pound from side control. Ojala really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Ojala managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Hughes.
Ojala can't do much from the bottom here. Hughes in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground. Ojala misses with a double jab.
Ojala shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Hughes counters with a slapping leg kick. Hughes lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Ojala misses with a shot to the body and Hughes counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Ojala! Ojala slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Hughes missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Hughes not landing any meaningful shots this time. Hughes is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Ojala defends it well. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Hughes trying to mount his opponent but Ojala defends it. Ojala wants to get back to full guard. Hughes throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Ojala pushes Hughes off and gets back to his feet. Ojala scores with a body shot.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Ojala tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Ojala scores to the head and body with a nice combination! Ojala gets a clinch. Ojala has clasped his hands together around Hughes's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done. Hughes regains half guard. Ojala is looking to take a break and control but Hughes is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Hughes manages to get to full guard.
Hughes trying to keep a closed guard but Ojala is proving a slippery customer.
Hughes throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Ojala escapes and throws Hughes's legs to the side, diving into side control! And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Mitch Hughes dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Ojala misses with a combination
and Hughes counters with a three punch combo that has Ojala backing up. Ojala nods at Hughes to acknowledge the strikes. Hughes misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Some wild striking there from Hughes.
Hughes scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Hughes misses with the ground and pound. Ojala is not content to let Hughes control the position. Ojala pushes Hughes away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Hughes gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control. Hughes is looking to take a break and control but Ojala is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hughes prevents Ojala from escaping the position. Hughes in side control, throwing shots but Ojala defends. Ojala seems a little lost for a moment, as Hughes dominates the positioning. Hughes is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Ojala is trying to escape and Hughes transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Ojala is forced to tap! Nice work there by Hughes! Very nice indeed!
