Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Georges St Pierre! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Justin Redman! The judges for this bout are Dillan Fox, Gregory Folan and Alec Ball.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! St Pierre moves out of range of the body kick. Redman takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket. St Pierre fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Redman on the side of the head. Redman cracks the inside of St Pierre's front leg. Redman closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Redman lands in his opponent's guard. St Pierre is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Redman defends well. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! St Pierre being controlled here, momentarily. St Pierre is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Redman trying to control but St Pierre is working from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Redman postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. St Pierre has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Redman can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. St Pierre isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Redman stacks St Pierre on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Redman! St Pierre wants to get back to his feet. St Pierre tries to improve position but can't. Redman is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. St Pierre knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Redman tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Redman in side control, just content to control the action for now. Redman wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by St Pierre, who protects the arm well. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Redman is looking to take a break and control but St Pierre is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Redman scoring with punches and elbows.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Redman is chipping away with strikes.
St Pierre takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head. St Pierre gets back to half guard. St Pierre actively working from the bottom here. Redman prevents St Pierre from standing back up.
Redman looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks St Pierre with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Redman trying to control the pace. Redman is sneakily working for an arm triangle but St Pierre sees it coming and defends easily.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Ground and pound from Redman. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Redman connects with a nice short shot to St Pierre's temple. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! St Pierre is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Redman pulls his head out easily. Redman is sneakily working for an arm triangle but St Pierre sees it coming and defends easily. Redman has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Redman is working for a kimura but St Pierre is defending it quite comfortably.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Redman lands a nice short elbow. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Redman lands with a punch from half guard. St Pierre is trying to stand.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Justin Redman dominated that round. That's time! St Pierre's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
Redman tries to close the distance and clinch but St Pierre swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from St Pierre. St Pierre throws a series of punches but Redman avoids them all with ease. St Pierre fails miserably with a takedown attempt. St Pierre lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Redman slaps away a takedown attempt from St Pierre, before circling back to the center of the mat. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Georges St Pierre. That's going to take a lot out of him. Redman misses with a kick to the body.
Redman takes the fight into the clinch. St Pierre wants a takedown but no success here.
St Pierre tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Redman smiles and moves away.
St Pierre rushes Redman and presses him up against the cage.
That's one minute gone in the round. St Pierre tries for a takedown but Redman manages to get underhooks.
St Pierre working hard to break the clinch. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Redman pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Redman connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head. Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Redman. St Pierre shrugs it off though. Georges St Pierre seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. St Pierre checks the leg kick. Redman throws a shot to the body.
Redman instigates a clinch. St Pierre looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now. St Pierre wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Redman lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage. St Pierre is looking for a takedown.
That's two minutes gone in the round. St Pierre tries to circle away but Redman has him pinned against the cage. Redman leaning his opponent against the cage. Redman is defending well against a takedown attempt. A quick uppercut on the inside from Redman. St Pierre is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Redman to keep the fight standing. Redman misses with a punch on the inside.
Redman lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down St Pierre. This has been an exciting period of action! Redman turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control! Redman trying to control the action but St Pierre is working from the bottom. St Pierre is working to avoid the ground and pound but Redman connects with a decent elbow.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Redman cracks St Pierre with an elbow. That is naaassty. Redman is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but St Pierre is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Redman looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. St Pierre tries to bench press Redman off him but Redman keeps the position. Redman is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. St Pierre looks calm but he's in trouble here. Redman gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. St Pierre is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Redman lets go of the hold and St Pierre can pop his arm back in it's socket.
