Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Brian Sanders!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jose Vargas!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sanders misses with a takedown attempt - Vargas sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Sanders closes the distance looking to clinch
and Vargas counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Vargas throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.

Vargas has taken the fight to the clinch.
Vargas lands a body punch in the clinch.
Sanders is trying to stall.
Vargas lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Sanders or not.
Sanders is breathing heavily.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Vargas misses with a shot to the kidneys.

Vargas pulls guard.
Vargas is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Vargas is working an open guard so Sanders takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Some bone on bone action there as Vargas checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Sanders shoots in looking for a takedown but Vargas manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Sanders's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Jose Vargas is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Sanders fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Brian Sanders. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Vargas lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.


It looks like Brian Sanders has been cut.
Sanders doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Vargas gets a clinch.

Vargas forces Sanders back against the cage and clinches.
A hook to the body from Vargas.
A short right from Vargas.
Vargas is trying to drag Sanders to the mat but Sanders just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Vargas lands with a short head shot on the inside.
Vargas lands a hook that snaps the head of Sanders backwards.

Vargas pulls guard effortlessly.
Sanders won't allow Vargas to sweep him here.

Vargas has a closed guard, preventing Sanders from standing up.

Sanders drops back, looking for a kneebar! Vargas looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Vargas looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Vargas!

Vargas working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Sanders is looking to regain half guard here but Vargas keeps moving and retains side control.
Vargas content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.

Vargas goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Sanders has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Vargas but great work by Sanders.
Vargas is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Sanders's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Vargas regains full guard. Nicely done.

Sanders is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Vargas is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Vargas has escaped and now he's on top!
Vargas engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

Vargas drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Vargas jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Vargas trying to control the position from guard on top but Sanders is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Vargas is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Sanders working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Vargas doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Vargas manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Vargas decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Nice body punch from Vargas.
Sanders tries to clinch there but Vargas circles away.
A head kick from Vargas lands but Sanders takes it in his stride.
Sanders takes a kick to the side of the head.
Vargas throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Sanders fails in his attempt to clinch.
Sanders fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Vargas avoids it really well and circles away.
Vargas tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Sanders manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Vargas clinches.
Vargas tries to pull guard but Sanders won't allow it.
Sanders struggles to land a body shot inside as Vargas controls his hands.

Vargas escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Vargas gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Sanders tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Vargas just stands there and leans against the cage.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Vargas blocks an uppercut.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Vargas prevents a body shot from Sanders.
Vargas works on Sanders's body with a couple of short punches.
Vargas jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Sanders walks away with a smile on his face. Vargas gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Vargas has Sanders up against the cage in a clinch.
Vargas is working Sanders over against the cage.
Vargas landing some nice looking knees to the body.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Vargas wants to sweep here but Sanders controlling him for the moment.

Vargas tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Sanders postures up.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Jose Vargas hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Sanders gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Vargas counters with a big head kick but Sanders shrugs it off.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Brian Sanders. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Sanders on the wrong end of a kick to the body.
Vargas lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
Vargas lets his hands go wild with a nice combination. Left! Right! Uppercut! Spinning backfist! Sanders goes down and covers up as Vargas starts wailing on him! The ref watches the action closely before stepping in and putting a stop to the fight!
