Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Juan Kerr! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Randsome Gracie! The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Alexandre Firmino and Thiago Cunha.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gracie shoots for a double leg takedown but Kerr sprawls well. He's pushed Gracie's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Gracie takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness. Kerr fails with the takedown and Gracie decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Kerr's guard. Gracie won't allow Kerr to get back to his feet. Gracie showing good wrestling skills to control the position. Kerr looking to hit a scissor sweep but Gracie is one step ahead there. Kerr pulls Gracie in close to his closed guard and prevents Gracie from doing any damage or advancing position. Kerr wants to get back to his feet but Gracie is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kerr is looking for a triangle but Gracie pushes his legs off easily.
Gracie postures up in Kerr's guard and throws a big left but Kerr blocks it. Gracie trying to control but Kerr is working from the bottom.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Gracie needs to keep his hands up - Kerr had a free shot at his head there. Kerr feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Kerr trying to control but Gracie is working from the bottom. Kerr wants to pass the guard but Gracie is keeping the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Gracie is on top in guard.
Gracie is fighting to break Kerr's control of his arms but Kerr is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Gracie trying to control the position from guard on top but Kerr is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Kerr is trying to keep Gracie in close.
Kerr is looking for a triangle but Gracie pushes his legs off easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gracie throwing strikes from guard but Kerr blocks nicely. Gracie trying to control the position from guard on top but Kerr is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Gracie passes Kerr's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Gracie moves into full mount! Kerr won't be happy about that! Gracie fails to take his opponent's back. Kerr knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Gracie on the ground. Kerr really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Kerr blocking the ground and pound. Kerr wants to hold on but Gracie pushes him away. Gracie sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Kerr wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Randsome Gracie will probably get the nod. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Kerr swinging wilding here.
Juan Kerr seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Kerr has his takedown stuffed and Gracie counters with a nice double leg into side control. Kerr won't be happy with that. Kerr is trying to improve his position. Kerr is trying to control Gracie's posture but Gracie avoids it. Gracie advances nicely into full mount. Kerr can't escape the position.
Kerr is working hard here to advance position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gracie throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Kerr because Gracie loaded up on that one. Gracie moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Kerr has worked his arm free - good work by Kerr!
Gracie trying to control the position but Kerr is working away. Kerr wants to get back to his feet. Kerr is looking to reverse the position. Gracie with the ground and pound but Kerr regains half guard under the barage of strikes.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Gracie is working for a submission of some sort.
Gracie sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Kerr defending well though. Gracie prevents Kerr from standing back up.
Kerr avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Gracie. Kerr tries to kick Gracie off but Gracie keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Kerr trying to hold on to Gracie's head to control him but Gracie postures up.
Gracie passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Kerr! Gracie looking to control but Kerr is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Kerr wants to hold on but Gracie pushes him away. Gracie looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead. Gracie prevents Kerr from getting the reversal.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Gracie avoids the attempt from Kerr to control. Gracie trying to control but he's not successful this time. Gracie goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Kerr turns into him and now he's in Gracie's guard.
Gracie keeping moving, preventing Kerr from controlling successfully. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Randsome Gracie showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!
Gracie keeps the fight on the outside. Kerr fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Gracie sprawls well initially but Kerr persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Randsome Gracie has got the better of the ground game so far. Gracie trying to control from the bottom.
Gracie is staying active underneath Kerr, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Kerr is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Gracie tries to roll over but Kerr keeps him under control. Kerr is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Gracie is just riding it out for now. Kerr eventually gives up the hold. Kerr wants to lay and pray for a moment but Gracie keeps working.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kerr is stalling here. Gracie is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Kerr seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Gracie has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work. Kerr throws a few strikes from the bottom but Gracie takes advantage and mounts! Gracie working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet. Gracie working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Kerr looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Gracie! Submission of the night perhaps?
