PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Karim Chamakh (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Casey Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chamakh comes into the arena with Immortal - Unearthly Kingdom blaring out of the sound system. Johnson is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Outside - Staind. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 5 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Karim Chamakh!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Casey Johnson!
The judges for this bout are Ivan Kurochkin, Viktor Lagutenko and Illya Tyunina.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Johnson is defended easily by Chamakh.
Johnson throws a poor cross that misses

and Chamakh counters with a shoot takedown. Johnson fights it but they end up in guard.
Chamakh wants to control from the top but Johnson keeps moving.
Chamakh slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Chamakh accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Karim Chamakh has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Johnson lands a really nice looking cross but Chamakh seems unphased.
Johnson changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Chamakh tries to avoid it but Johnson manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Chamakh to the ground. Chamakh escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Johnson shoots in for a takedown but Chamakh shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Karim Chamakh has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Casey Johnson.

and Chamakh decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Johnson's guard.

Johnson throws an elbow that misses. Chamakh uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Johnson's guard. Nice move by Chamakh!

The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

and Chamakh counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Johnson!

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Johnson wants to improve his position but Chamakh is controlling well.

Johnson just misses with a punch to the body.
Johnson shoots for a double leg takedown but Chamakh sprawls well. He's pushed Johnson's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Chamakh ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Johnson moves away.

Chamakh needs to keep his hands up - Johnson had a free shot at his head there.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Johnson wants to improve his position but instead Chamakh has moved into half guard.
Chamakh has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Chamakh seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Johnson does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Johnson has his hands clasped together around Chamakh's back. He's all about the action.
Chamakh is just content to waste time from the top position. Johnson takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Johnson tries to close the distance and clinch but Chamakh swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Johnson looks to land a left hand but Chamakh moved out of range nicely.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Chamakh feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Johnsons jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!
Chamakh dodges the punch combination from Johnson.
Casey Johnson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Johnson defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Chamakh.
Johnson rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Chamakh moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Chamakh wants to lay and pray for a moment but Johnson keeps working.

Chamakh is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Johnson will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Chamakh misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
