PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between James Woods (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Walt Potter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Potter's choice of entrance music: Emalkay - When I Look At You. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Walt Potter was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, James Woods!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 5 - 2, fighting out of Montreal, Walt Potter!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Cecil Peabody and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Woods tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Potter swivels and escapes.
Woods tries to score a power double leg takedown but Potter sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Woods somewhat.

Potter dives in and scores a takedown into Woods's guard.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Potter wants to stand but Woods is controlling his posture from full guard.

Woods has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Potter can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Woods has his foot on Potter's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Potter works his way back into a safe position though.
Woods is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Woods working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Potter doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Potter manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Potter rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Woods moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Woods is trying hard to land a takedown here. Potter sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Potter drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

and Potter counters with a lovely shot to the body.

Potter throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Woods was covering up waiting for the punch and Potter finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Potter wants to get up but he can't break Woods's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Woods escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Potter gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Potter wants to stand but Woods is controlling his posture from full guard.

Woods is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Potter is aware though and is defending well.

Woods has his foot on Potter's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Potter works his way back into a safe position though.

Potter got a little sloppy there for a moment and Woods has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Potter has managed to get both his arms back between Woods's legs - danger averted.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Potter stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Potter wants it to stay on the feet.

Potter closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Woods connects with a nice short shot to Potter's temple.

Woods seems to be working for a kimura but Potter defends the submission attempt.

Woods looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Woods wants to work for an arm triangle but Potter is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Woods throws a strike but Potter avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Woods accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Potter lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Woods backs up against the cage.
Potter ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Woods moves away.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Woods moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Potter has worked his arm free - good work by Potter!

Potter on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
Potter parries the strikes from Woods easily there. Woods is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Potter to escape.

Woods goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Potter has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Woods but great work by Potter.

Potter decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Potter closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Woods quickly recovers to half guard.

Woods is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Potter pulls his head out easily.

Potter gets to his feet - Woods follows without any prompting.
Woods is looking to clinch but Potter is avoiding it.
Woods misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Potter.

and Potter counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Woods isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Potter stacks Woods on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Potter!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Walt Potter comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Potter has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
