Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 2 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Henry Pitman! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
8 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, James Steptoe! The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Yasuomi Hirokawa.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Steptoe fails to land the takedown. Steptoe dodges the punch combination from Pitman.
Pitman stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Pitman wants it to stay on the feet. Steptoe tries to score a power double leg takedown but Pitman sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Steptoe somewhat. Henry Pitman has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James Steptoe. No luck with that takedown attempt from Steptoe. Steptoe uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Pitman.
Steptoe looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Nice takedown defense from Steptoe. No joy for Pitman on that attempt. Steptoe has his takedown stuffed and Pitman counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. Pitman tries for a takedown but Steptoe sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Pitman could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Pitman uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Pitman cracks Steptoe with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
That's one minute gone in the round. Steptoe has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him. Pitman throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Pitman slaps away a takedown attempt from Steptoe, before circling back to the center of the mat. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Steptoe. Pitman lands a jab-cross combination. Steptoe misses with a takedown attempt - Pitman sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Steptoe shoots in but Pitman avoids the takedown attempt easily. Steptoe fails with a takedown attempt. Pitman throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd. Steptoe looks gassed! The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Pitman getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Pitman misses with a two punch combination.
Pitman jabs Steptoe to the body, keeping him at a distance. Pitman connects with a good right hand that stumbles Steptoe. Steptoe circles away out of range and recomposes himself. Pitman throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Pitman throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Steptoe. Steptoe is trying desperately to land a takedown but Pitman is having absolutely none of it. This is turning into a bit of a nightmare for Steptoe. Steptoe misses with a takedown and Pitman counters with a stiff right hand. Pitman throws a hook but Steptoe avoids it easily. Pitman defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Steptoe. Danga de danga de dang - Pitman scores with a four punch combination! James Steptoe seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Steptoe stuffs the takedown. Steptoe shoots in looking for a takedown. Pitman tries to sprawl out of it but Steptoe keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Pitman manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Pitman throws a right and a left that both miss. Steptoe drives through with a takedown into guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Pitman is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Steptoe trying to control the position from guard on top but Pitman is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Pitman wants to sweep here but Steptoe controlling him for the moment. Steptoe forces his way into half guard. Pitman has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Steptoe is working away from the top position though. Pitman is in trouble now - Steptoe has advanced to mount!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Pitman is in all sorts of trouble here.
Steptoe is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Steptoe lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Pitman hang on? Steptoe forces the positional change into back control. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Steptoe is working for a rear naked choke. Pitman is not defending it well and Steptoe has tightened it up quickly! This could be all over! Pitman refuses to tap and goes to sleep, forcing the referee to intervene. A little trickle of blood came out of Pitman's nose as his head slumped to the floor. That is naaaasty!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:45 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). James Steptoe!
