PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Nobu Murphy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Omaha Steak (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Nobu Murphy!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Omaha Steak!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Eliza Hachem and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Steak gets caught napping as Murphy dives in and scores a takedown. Steak manages to retain guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Murphy's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Murphy postures up.

Murphy avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Steak can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Murphy controls the pace.
Steak is pulling down on Murphy's head. It's preventing any offense from Murphy, at least for the moment.
Murphy won't allow Steak to get back to his feet.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Murphy throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Steak's waist but Steak gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Murphy off to one side.
Murphy shoots in but no luck this time.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Murphy enables Steak to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Murphy manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Murphy will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Murphy is adopting a defensive guard.
Steak would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Steak stops Murphy from standing up.
Murphy has a closed guard, preventing Steak from standing up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Murphy controls Steak momentarily but Steak frees himself.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Nobu Murphy just wasn't active enough.

Steak drives through with a takedown into guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Murphy has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Steak is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Murphy wants to stand but Steak is controlling the position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Steak fails in his attempt to clinch.
Murphy shoots in but no luck this time.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Nobu Murphy. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Steak throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Murphy tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Steak is in Murphy's guard.
Steak sitting in guard here, content to control.
Let's hope that Steak has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Steak stops Murphy from standing up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Omaha Steak hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Steak is looking to clinch.
Horrible takedown by Murphy or perhaps it was just good defense by Steak which made him look bad.
Murphy swats away the attempt to clinch by Steak.

Steak manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Murphy on his heels. He'll look to pass Murphy's guard now, I'm sure.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Murphy not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Omaha Steak dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Murphy tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Steak swivels and escapes.
Steak tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Murphy paws at him with a jab and circles away.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Murphy is defended easily by Steak.

Steak looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Steak passes into side control, despite Murphy's attempt to control the position.
Murphy can't do much from the bottom here.

Murphy is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Steak is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Steak stands up and beckons Murphy to his feet.

Steak shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Murphy really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Murphy is trying to control the position from the bottom.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Steak accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Steak throws a big right hand that misses.
Steak is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Murphy is looking to stand up but Steak isn't so interested in that idea.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Murphy fails to land the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Nobu Murphy. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Steak drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Murphy wants to get back to his feet.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Murphy is looking for a sweep.

Steak decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Steak defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Murphy.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Steak dives in and scores a takedown into Murphy's guard.
Murphy is trying to keep Steak in close.
Steak stops Murphy from standing up.

Murphy is trying to control the position but Steak postures up.
Steak is stalling in the full guard.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Steak feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Omaha Steak has got the better of the ground game so far.
Murphy wants to stand and escape but Steak is having none of it.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Steak stays in close to Murphy's body and controls the position.
Steak must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Steak closes the distance and clinches.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Omaha Steak showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Murphy's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. And we move into the final round!


Murphy swats away the attempt to clinch by Steak.
Murphy shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Steak as he jumps to the side.
Steak displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Murphy.
Steak tries to clinch but Murphy is having none of it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Steak defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Murphy.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Nobu Murphy. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Steak wants to clinch up but Murphy keeps it at a distance.

Steak closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Steak wants to stand up but Murphy has a hold of him and won't allow it.

Murphy is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.
Steak stops Murphy from getting back to his feet.
Murphy wants to control but Steak is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Nobu Murphy just wasn't active enough.
Steak lets loose with a powerful body kick. Murphy will feel that in the morning.
Murphy takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Steak tries to clinch there but Murphy circles away.
Murphy has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Steak.

Steak shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Steak stalling.
Steak looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Omaha Steak hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Steak takes the fight into the clinch.
Murphy has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Steak avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Steak effectively controlling the action here.
Murphy jumps guard but Steak turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Murphy fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Steak breaks from the clinch.
Nobu Murphy is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Murphy feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Steak has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Murphy off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Steak tries to close the distance and clinch up but Murphy swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Murphy shoots in but Steak avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Steak looking to score a takedown here. Murphy is defending well but Steak drives through and ends up in Murphy's guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Steak is looking to stand up but Murphy won't let him.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Steak seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Nobu Murphy has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Omaha Steak comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Steak has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
