PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mark Pace (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mark McKagan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McKagan comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Ranma 1/2 - Kung fu fighting kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Mark McKagan will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mark Pace!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mark McKagan!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Tiny Johnson and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Pace drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Pace advances to half guard.
McKagan trying to hold on to Pace's head to control him but Pace postures up.
McKagan wants to get back to full guard.
McKagan is looking to control Pace's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can McKagan avoid being mounted?
McKagan pushes Pace off looking to stand but Pace dives back in and keeps control.
Pace looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Pace controlling the action here.
Pace passes to side control.
Pace working the body and head with strikes.

Pace looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
McKagan is trying to improve his position.

Pace in side control, throwing shots but McKagan defends.

Pace is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. McKagan knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Pace happy to just control the position for now.
Pace wants to lay and pray for a moment but McKagan keeps working.
Pace tries to advance to mount but can't.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

and Pace counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Pace is breathing heavily.
Pace advances position into side control!

McKagan defending against the ground and pound.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
McKagan is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Pace working away.
Pace trying to control the position but McKagan is working away.
McKagan is looking for a sweep.

Pace wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by McKagan, who protects the arm well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
A right-left combo lands from McKagan.


It looks like Mark Pace has been cut.

Pace fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. McKagan sprawls well initially but Pace persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
McKagan wants to control but Pace is keeping busy and won't allow it.
McKagan is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Pace's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Pace's back!
Pace looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.
McKagan is hanging on to Pace's back as he tries to escape.
Pace turns into McKagan and is now in his guard.
Pace is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Pace trying to control but McKagan is working from the bottom.
Pace landing some decent shots from guard.
Pace advances position into side control!
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

McKagan takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Pace advances nicely into full mount.
Pace controlling his opponent.
Pace with shots to the head and body - McKagan looks very uncomfortable down there.
Pace looking to control and managing it successfully.

McKagan is trying to escape the mount.
Pace pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
McKagan keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Pace lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
This has been an exciting period of action!

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Pace gets the takedown into side control.
Pace cracks McKagan with a big right hand but McKagan just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

You can see the frustration on McKagan's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Pace wants to lay and pray for a moment but McKagan keeps working.

Pace lands a nice forearm strike.
Pace tries to advance to mount but can't.
Mark Pace overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Pace is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, McKagan has escaped the position, nice work there.
Pace wants to control but McKagan is keeping him busy.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
McKagan tries to bench press Pace off him but Pace keeps the position.

Pace trying to control the action but McKagan is working from the bottom.

Pace working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Pace goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, McKagan has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Pace but great work by McKagan.

Pace sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
McKagan is thwarting Pace's attempts to control the position.
Pace gets back to full guard.
McKagan preventing the sweep.
Pace bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in McKagan's guard.
Pace trying to control the position from guard on top but McKagan is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

McKagan trying to keep a closed guard but Pace is proving a slippery customer.

McKagan has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Pace can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Pace pushing down on McKagan's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Pace trying to control the action but McKagan is working from the bottom.

Pace wants to take a breather but McKagan is having none of it.
Pace has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
McKagan is squirming around, avoiding Pace's attempts to control the action.

Pace has hold of McKagan's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and McKagan manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Pace looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
McKagan holds on to Pace around his waist, trying desperately to prevent any attacks.
McKagan tries to lock up and control but Pace gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Pace raining down shots from the mount!
The referee warns McKagan that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
McKagan wants to control but Pace is having none of it.
McKagan is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Pace working away from the top, dropping strikes.
Pace scoring with strikes but McKagan is staying in there.
McKagan squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.
Pace with a couple of short strikes.
Pace fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
McKagan is desperately trying to improve his position but Pace has a good base and remains in mount.
BOOM! Pace connects with a massive shot to the dome!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McKagan is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.
McKagan tries to hold on but Pace postures up.
McKagan regains half guard.
McKagan tries to roll over but Pace keeps him under control.
McKagan looks like he's trying to stand up.
McKagan blocking the ground and pound attempt from Pace.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

McKagan tries for a takedown but Pace circles away easily

and Pace counters with a nice double leg into guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now McKagan is on top in guard.
Pace tries to strike from the bottom.
McKagan slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Pace is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
McKagan stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Pace swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Pace can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as McKagan controls the pace.
McKagan trying to control but Pace is working from the bottom.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Pace is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

McKagan is pressing down on Pace's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Nice takedown defense from McKagan. No joy for Pace on that attempt.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Pace circles away from the clinch attempt.
Pace shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and McKagan counters with a left and a right that stings Pace.
Mark McKagan is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
McKagan misses with a double jab.
Mark McKagan seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Pace shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and McKagan counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by McKagan.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mark Pace. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Pace on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Pace tries to get out of the position.

McKagan is nestled in close to Pace, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

McKagan tries to pass the half guard into mount. Pace knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Pace connects with a nice short shot to McKagan's temple.
Pace stops McKagan from getting back to his feet.
Pace is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
McKagan tries to roll over but Pace keeps him under control.

McKagan is defending against the submission attempts here by Pace.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
McKagan slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Mark McKagan comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Pace has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
