Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Calgary Alberta! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Nikolas Thomas! The judges for this bout are Elvis Blanc, Dillan Fox and Gregory Folan.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Alberta is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot. Sloppy strikes from Alberta. Those never looked like landing. Nice sprawl there from Thomas as Alberta shoots in. Alberta closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Thomas to the mat! Thomas manages to get full guard. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Alberta looking to pass the guard. Alberta drops back, looking for a kneebar! Thomas looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Thomas looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Thomas! Thomas landing with strikes to the head and body from side control. You can see the frustration on Alberta's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Thomas tries to stand but Alberta is controlling his head.
That's one minute gone in the round. Thomas taking a break here but Alberta is having none of it and regains half guard. Alberta might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Alberta keeping control of the position. Alberta works his way to full guard. Good work. Thomas trying to control the position from guard on top but Alberta is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Thomas missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Alberta working for a triangle but Thomas defends it easily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Alberta working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Thomas doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Thomas manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Thomas postures up in Alberta's guard and throws a big left but Alberta blocks it. Alberta looking for a sweep. Not yet Alberta, not yet. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Thomas got a little sloppy there for a moment and Alberta has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Thomas has managed to get both his arms back between Alberta's legs - danger averted. Thomas must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Thomas wants to pass the guard but Alberta is keeping the position. Thomas sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Alberta's guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Alberta is staying active underneath Thomas, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Alberta is trying to maintain the position but Thomas is very close to passing his half guard. Alberta is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Thomas's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Thomas's back! Thomas trying to control the action but Alberta just sinks the hooks in. Alberta working for the choke. Alberta is working the back position looking for the choke. Oh, he's slid into an armbar! Beautiful transition and Thomas taps out! Fantastic Jiu Jitsu from Alberta.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Calgary Alberta! Calgary Alberta spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
