Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kenji Matsumoto! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Unto Haikio! The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Kenichi Hosakawa and Yukihiro Yamamoto.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Matsumoto lands the left hand. Matsumoto tries to land a front kick but Haikio steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed. Matsumoto shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Haikio but Haikio pushes him off and we're back to square one. Matsumoto misses the shot to the body. Matsumoto throws a series of punches but Haikio avoids them all with ease. Kenji Matsumoto seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Haikio doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body. Matsumoto clinches up with Haikio and pushes him back against the cage. Haikio stalls. Matsumoto wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Haikio has him pressed against the cage. Matsumoto is trying to break the clinch but Haikio has him pressed against the cage. Haikio has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Matsumoto is trying to keep an underhook but Haikio manages to get the takedown into half guard. Haikio is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Haikio seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Matsumoto does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Matsumoto tries to kick Haikio off but Haikio keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Haikio wants to control but Matsumoto is keeping him busy. Matsumoto knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Haikio on the ground. Haikio content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. Haikio not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Haikio has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Matsumoto is trying to control but can't.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Matsumoto tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target. Matsumoto shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Haikio had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Matsumoto is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Haikio Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Matsumoto's back instead. Haikio is landing with strikes from the back. Matsumoto is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
Matsumoto wants to get back to his feet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Haikio has his opponent's back and is working for the choke. Haikio is looking for the choke from the back position but Matsumoto is controlling his hands well. Haikio looks gassed! Haikio is riding his opponent, not letting Matsumoto buck him off. Matsumoto looking to stop the rear naked choke attempt by controlling the hands. Matsumoto preventing the rear naked choke attempt from Haikio. Matsumoto wants to get back to his feet.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Haikio has his opponent's back and is working for the choke. Matsumoto rolls, trying to escape but Haikio keeps control of the position.
Haikio is cranking Matsumoto's head sideways - that looks painful. He's managed to get his other arm under the chin and this looks bad for Matsumoto! He's tightened the choke and Matsumoto is tapping out!
