PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Jazmid Kongo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Felix Cardosa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Felix Cardosa told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jazmid Kongo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Felix Cardosa!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kongo shoots in and bounces Cardosa off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Kongo content to stall in guard here.
Cardosa is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Kongo not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

We're going to have a standup here because Jazmid Kongo wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Kongo circles away from the clinch attempt.
Cardosa ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Kongo moves away.

Kongo moves into range and clinches up with Cardosa.
Cardosa is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Cardosa wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Kongo tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Cardosa avoids it.
Cardosa fails to pull guard.
Cardosa has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Kongo after a bit of a struggle.
Jazmid Kongo has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Felix Cardosa.
Kongo is pressed up against the cage. Cardosa has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Kongo down to the mat. Kongo avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Kongo rushes Cardosa and presses him up against the cage.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.
Cardosa drops down looking for an ankle pick but Kongo pulls his leg out and moves away.
Nice takedown defense from Kongo. No joy for Cardosa on that attempt.

Kongo darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Kongo is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Kongo is taking a breather. Cardosa says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Cardosa slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Cardosa working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Kongo doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Kongo manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Kongo pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Cardosa is keeping the position for now.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kongo trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Kongo gets to his feet. Cardosa looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Cardosa tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Kongo paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Kongo shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Kongo looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Kongo escapes and gets back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jazmid Kongo dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Kongo shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Cardosa napping and manages to drive through into side control!
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Cardosa tries to bench press Kongo off him but Kongo keeps the position.
Kongo controls the position.

Kongo decides to take the fight back to the feet.
A swing and a miss from Cardosa.
Kongo avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
Kongo misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Cardosa looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Kongo is fending him off so far but Cardosa persists. Nope, Kongo circles away and we're back to standing.
Good work by Kongo as he checks the leg kick.

Kongo swats away the attempt to clinch by Cardosa.
Kongo rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Cardosa moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Cardosa fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Cardosa tries to close the distance and clinch but Kongo swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Cardosa uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Kongo.
Kongo fails to land the takedown.
Jazmid Kongo is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Cardosa takes the fight into the clinch.

Kongo jumps into guard, dragging Cardosa to the mat.

Kongo thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Cardosa trying to control but Kongo is working from the bottom.
Cardosa working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Kongo is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Cardosa stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kongo swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Kongo wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Jazmid Kongo overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Cardosa trying to control the position from guard on top but Kongo is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Kongo moves into the clinch successfully.
Cardosa can't get the takedown.

Kongo escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Cardosa gets caught napping as Kongo dives in and scores a takedown. Cardosa manages to retain guard.
Cardosa is breathing heavily.
Kongo lands a couple of elbows.
Kongo with a nice head shot there.
Kongo postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Kongo's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Kongo forces his way into half guard.
Cardosa keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Kongo tries to pass to full mount but Cardosa defends it.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Cardosa is defending against the submission attempts here by Kongo.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Cardosa throws a low kick, looking for Kongo's leg but Kongo calmly moves out of range.
Cardosa takes a swing at Kongo's ribcage but misses.

Kongo has managed to clinch.

Kongo's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
A slow jab from Cardosa misses its intended target.
Cardosa fails with the takedown

and Kongo counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Cardosa!
Cardosa is looking to get to half guard.

Kongo avoids the attempt from Cardosa to control.
Kongo controlling from the full mount.
Cardosa is looking to improve his position but Kongo isn't that keen on the idea.
Kongo landing punches.
Kongo controlling the position easily from mount.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Cardosa blocking the ground and pound.
Cardosa is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Kongo controlling the pace for now.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Kongo stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.
Kongo stuffs the takedown attempt from Cardosa. Cardosa gets slowly back to his feet.
Cardosa tries to close the distance and clinch up but Kongo swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Some bone on bone action there as Kongo checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.

Kongo shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Cardosa manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Kongo stands and throws Cardosa's legs to the side, diving into side control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here.
Kongo in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Cardosa tries to buck Kongo off but Kongo is having none of it.

Kongo stands up and we're back to a striking position.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jazmid Kongo showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Kongo, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
