PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Oscar Salcedo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Layne Staley (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Salcedo comes to the cage accompanied by Remember my NAME!. Staley has chosen Alice in Chains - No Excuses as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Layne Staley has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Oscar Salcedo!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Layne Staley!
The judges for this bout are Radbod Blank, Patrick Alders and Saam Ante.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Staley lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Staley lands with a cross.
Salcedo takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Staley dives in and grabs Salcedo's left leg, looking for a takedown. Salcedo pushes down on Staley's head and hops out.
Salcedo looks to land a combination. Staley sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Staley shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
A looping hook to the body misses from Salcedo. Staley does a little dance to reset his feet.
Salcedo feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Staleys jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!
Staley fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Salcedo manages to avoid it.
Salcedo tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Staley shoots for a double leg takedown but Salcedo sprawls well. He's pushed Staley's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Staley fails to land the takedown.
Oscar Salcedo has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Layne Staley.
Salcedo swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Salcedo tries to clinch up but Staley circles away and keeps his distance.

Staley gets the takedown into side control.
The strikes coming from Staley are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
Salcedo is looking for a sweep.

Staley working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.

Staley wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Salcedo, who protects the arm well.
Salcedo struggling a bit here.
Salcedo tries to buck Staley off but Staley is having none of it.
Staley scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Salcedo to see if he's OK.
Salcedo manages to get back to half guard.

Staley is trying to work for a kimura but Salcedo is defending well.
Salcedo tries to get to full guard but Staley has control of the leg.
Staley passes to side control.

Salcedo regains half guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Staley is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Salcedo gets full guard.
Salcedo is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Salcedo is trying to control the position but Staley postures up.
Staley won't allow Salcedo to get back to his feet.
Staley won't allow Salcedo to sweep him here.
Staley stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Salcedo swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Staley is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Salcedo is trying to control the position but Staley postures up.
Salcedo looking to hit a scissor sweep but Staley is one step ahead there.

Salcedo can't keep his opponent in guard - Staley advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Salcedo is looking to improve his position.
Staley sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Salcedo defending well though.
Salcedo is pressing down on Staley's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Salcedo trying to keep a closed guard but Staley is proving a slippery customer.
Staley stands and throws Salcedo's legs to the side, diving into side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Salcedo is looking for a sweep.
Staley working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.

Staley working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Staley looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Staley trying to control the position but Salcedo is working away.
Salcedo is trying to control Staley's posture but Staley avoids it.

Staley is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Salcedo is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Salcedo manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Salcedo is trying to improve his position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Layne Staley will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Salcedo is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Staley's half guard.

Staley is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Salcedo's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Salcedo's back!

Salcedo breaks Staley's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.

Staley has momentary wrist control but Salcedo slips an elbow through the middle.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Staley is on top in guard.

Salcedo keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Salcedo is concentrating on defense, preventing Staley from advancing position.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Staley prevents Salcedo from improving his position.
Staley is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

Salcedo is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Staley with the ground and pound from mount.

Staley working for a guillotine from mount but Salcedo is in no mood to give up.
Salcedo tries to hold on but Staley pushes him away.
Staley has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Salcedo's face.


It looks like Oscar Salcedo has been cut.
Staley putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound!

Staley is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Salcedo to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Salcedo shrugs it off.

Staley is working for a guillotine from mount but Salcedo frees his head quite easily.
Salcedo tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

Staley postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Salcedo looks a forlorn figure.


Oscar Salcedo's cut is getting worse.
Staley scoring with strikes but Salcedo is staying in there.

Jeez, Oscar Salcedo's cut is really nasty now. The referee must be thinking about getting that checked.

The referee calls the doctor in to look at Oscar Salcedo's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:30 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Cut). Layne Staley!
Layne Staley is the new heavyweight champion!
