PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ricky Velez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Michael David (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). David is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Separate Ways. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ricky Velez !
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Michael David!
The judges for this bout are Alyssa Summers, Bruno Lombardi and John Roberts.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
No joy there for Velez , who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Velez misses with a few strikes there.
Velez swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and David counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Velez misses with a jab, cross combination.

David shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. David showed some decent athleticism there.

Velez keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. David lands a nice short elbow.
Well, if David is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
David is keen to just control but Velez is a slippery customer.

That's one minute gone in the round.
David wants to stand but Velez has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Velez trying to hold on to David's head to control him but David postures up.
Velez is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because David is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Velez taking some punishment here, with David in his half guard.

David looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
David thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Velez 's head.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. David lands a nice short elbow.
Velez wants to improve his position but David is controlling well.
David frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Velez knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for David on the ground.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Velez is in all sorts of trouble here.

Velez defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from David.
David looking to control but Velez is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

David has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
David wants to control the pace but Velez is squirming around nicely.

David throwing strikes here but Velez is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
Velez can't escape the position.
David landing punches.
David can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Velez is looking to escape.
Velez keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Velez is breathing heavily.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Michael David dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Velez shoots and misses

and David counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Velez looking for submissions from the bottom but instead David passes into side control.

David trying to control the position but Velez is working away.
You can see the frustration on Velez 's face as David controls the position.
Velez on the wrong end of some ground and pound.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Velez is looking for a sweep.
David creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.
Velez is looking for a sweep.
David is putting a hurting on Velez here, landing some big shots from side control.
David tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
David staying calm.

David decides to take the fight back to the feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

David has managed to clinch.

David pulls Velez into guard.
Michael David has got the better of the ground game so far.

David has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Velez should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, David has tightened it up now! Velez should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:47 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Michael David!
During a confident post fight interview, Michael David thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
