Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Amarrao Mestre! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, James Sanders! The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Edson Gomes and Paulo Santos.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sanders tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Excellent takedown into side control there by Mestre. Sanders manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. Mestre takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. Sanders is trying to get back to full guard. Mestre is nestled in close to Sanders, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Sanders pushes Mestre off looking to stand but Mestre dives back in and keeps control.
Mestre throwing shots but Sanders is blocking nicely. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Mestre lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. Sanders regains full guard. Nicely done. Mestre with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Sanders pulls Mestre in close to prevent any damage. Sanders looking to hit a scissor sweep but Mestre is one step ahead there. Sanders trying to control the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sanders wriggles free and stands up. Mestre closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Sanders is trying to control but can't.
Sanders has one foot on Mestre's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet. Sanders avoids a kick to the body.
Mestre scores a takedown into full mount! The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Sanders tries to hold on but Mestre pushes him away.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mestre working the ground and pound effectively.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Sanders is looking to improve his position but Mestre isn't that keen on the idea. Mestre with a couple of short strikes.
Sanders is rocked! Sanders regains half guard. Sanders is still in real trouble! Can Mestre finish him? Mestre missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Sanders seems to have recovered his senses. Sanders works his way to full guard. Good work. Mestre throws an elbow that misses. Sanders uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Mestre's guard. Nice move by Sanders! Mestre knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Sanders on the ground. Mestre looking for a sweep. Not yet Mestre, not yet. Sanders wants to control from the top but Mestre keeps moving.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mestre is wriggling around but Sanders manages to pass to half guard.
Sanders wants to control but Mestre is keeping him busy. Sanders thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Mestre's head. Mestre is positioning himself well to prevent Sanders advancing to mount. Mestre is refusing to be controlled, as Sanders sits in half guard. Mestre tries to roll over but Sanders keeps him under control. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Sanders not doing much here.
James Sanders has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet. Mestre fails with the takedown.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Sanders throws the kick towards the body but Mestre avoids it. Sanders fails to land with a series of punches.
Mestre keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Sanders shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Mestre napping and manages to drive through into side control! Mestre is looking to regain half guard here but Sanders keeps moving and retains side control. This has been an exciting period of action! Mestre struggling a bit here. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Sanders taking a breather here. Mestre on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Mestre tries to get out of the position. Mestre gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Amarrao Mestre dominated that round. That's time! Back to the action!
Sanders is looking to clinch but Mestre is avoiding it.
Mestre shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Sanders's guard. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Mestre accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Mestre in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Mestre throws a strike but Sanders rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. Sanders works a leg free and moves into half guard. Amarrao Mestre overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Mestre is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Sanders's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Sanders's back! Mestre doesn't have the hooks in and Sanders manages to turn into his guard.
Mestre wants to improve his position but instead Sanders has moved into half guard.
Sanders is trying to control. Mestre wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Sanders prevents Mestre from improving his position. Mestre moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sanders looking to pass the guard. Mestre wants to sweep here but Sanders controlling him for the moment. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Mestre is trying to control the position but Sanders postures up. Sanders looking to pass the guard. Sanders trying to control the position from guard on top but Mestre is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Mestre seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now. The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
The ref stands the fighters back up because Amarrao Mestre just wasn't active enough. Mestre tries to keep at a distance but Sanders has taken the fight into the clinch. Mestre has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Sanders regains guard immediately.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Sanders manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Sanders avoids the attempt from Mestre to control. Sanders thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Sanders trying to control but he's not successful this time. This has been an exciting period of action! Mestre bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done! Sanders is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Sanders stands up and beckons Mestre to join him on the feet. Sanders clinches up against the cage.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mestre tightens his grip and picks Sanders up, before dumping him to the ground. Sanders manages to land in guard. Sanders looking for a triangle here. Mestre is fighting it but it looks tight! Sanders pulls the arm across and this one won't last much longer! Nope, Mestre is tapping out - this one is all over!
