PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Gustav Graves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Pedro Rua (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rua has chosen Don't Talk To Strangers as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 26 - 9 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Gustav Graves!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Pedro Rua!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Stewart Dunkirk and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Graves slips under a jab.

Graves shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Rua napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Graves tries to advance to mount but can't.
Rua is not content to let Graves control the position.
Graves postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Graves throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Rua works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.
Graves perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Graves trying to pass the guard but Rua defending well.
Rua avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Graves.
Graves seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Rua does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Graves is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Rua sees it coming and defends easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Graves is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Rua is looking to escape.

Graves wants to work for an arm triangle but Rua is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Graves is looking for a kimura but Rua is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Graves to get the leverage.
Graves wants to control but Rua is keeping him busy.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Graves in particular looking to stall.

Rua is defending against the submission attempts here by Graves.
Graves is looking to stall here but Rua recovers full guard.
Graves is looking to advance position but Rua has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Graves is desperately trying to improve his position but Rua has a good base and remains in mount.

That's time! Graves's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Graves ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Graves misses with a low kick as Rua jumps back.

Rua moves into range and clinches up with Graves.
Graves lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Rua or not.

Rua escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Graves showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Rua.
Rua misses with a double jab.
Rua throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Graves counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
A left lands for Rua.


It looks like Gustav Graves has been cut.
Graves keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Rua.
Graves shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Rua as he jumps to the side.
Rua throws a head kick that misses.
Graves wants to clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Graves throws a series of punches but Rua avoids them all with ease.
Graves misses with a combination
and Rua counters with a low kick, right behind Graves 's knee.
Rua takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
A shot to the body from Graves misses
and Rua counters with an inside leg kick.
The fighters circle momentarily. Graves darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Rua stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Rua wants it to stay on the feet.
Rua throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Rua misses with a body kick.
Graves throws a right and a left that both miss.
Graves throws a jab but it's blocked by Rua.
A jab lands there for Graves.

Rua moves into range and clinches up with Graves.
Graves drops down looking for an ankle pick but Rua pulls his leg out and moves away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gustav Graves. That's going to take a lot out of him.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Rua throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Graves was covering up waiting for the punch and Rua finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Rua trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Rua looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Rua stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Graves swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Gustav Graves overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Graves is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Rua is looking to advance position but Graves has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Graves sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
Graves working some short elbows here. He postures up to throw some more ground and pound but Rua slips a leg through to get back to half guard. Nice work.
Graves trying to control from Rua's half guard. Rua has other ideas though and has regained full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Graves trying to control the position from guard on top but Rua is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Graves postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Graves passes Rua's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Graves is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Pedro Rua will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The cut man is working on Gustav Graves's cut.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Rua throws a hook but Graves blocks it.
Graves uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Rua.
Rua bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Rua throws out a loose jab but Graves uses good head movement to avoid it.

Graves darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Graves is just content to waste time from the top position. Rua takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Graves throws a strike but Rua rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Graves lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Rua!
Graves trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Graves sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!

Rua has worked his way to half guard, taking advantage of Graves's lack of action.
Graves is looking to pass Rua's guard but actually Rua recovers to full guard.
Graves wants to pass the guard but Rua is keeping the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Graves stands and throws Rua's legs to the side, diving into side control.
The ground and pound from Graves seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.

Graves thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Rua stops Graves from passing to mount.

Graves taking a break here but Rua is having none of it and regains half guard.
Rua is not content to let Graves control the position.
Graves trying to pass the guard but Rua defending well.

Gustav Graves showed his dominance in that final round.
