PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Martin Magnus (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mark Firestone (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Martin Magnus!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Mark Firestone!
The judges for this bout are Hirohito Nitta, Shigeki Fujiwara and Kenichi Hosakawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Magnus tries to keep at a distance but Firestone has taken the fight into the clinch.
Firestone drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Magnus gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Firestone misses with a hook to the ribs.
Magnus tries to stall but Firestone uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Firestone tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Magnus just stands there and leans against the cage.

Firestone pulls guard successfully.
Firestone controls Magnus momentarily but Magnus frees himself.
Firestone working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Magnus.
Firestone keeping moving, preventing Magnus from controlling successfully.
Magnus is looking to work some ground and pound but Firestone has wrist control.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Magnus jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Firestone is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Firestone and Magnus has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

Magnus decides to stand up, so the ref orders Firestone to his feet.
Magnus is breathing heavily.
Firestone throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Mark Firestone seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Firestone shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Magnus as he avoids it easily.
Firestone shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Magnus pinned against the cage. Magnus gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Magnus closes the distance and clinches.
Firestone is looking to break free of the clinch but Magnus has double underhooks.
Firestone wants to get back to striking at distance but Magnus won't allow it.

Firestone drops back looking for a leg! Magnus is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Magnus manages to kick Firestone off! Firestone jumps back into Magnus's guard.
Magnus is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Firestone postures up and lands a big shot to Magnus's brow.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Firestone shoots in looking for a takedown. Magnus tries to sprawl out of it but Firestone keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Magnus manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Firestone clinches up against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Magnus's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.



Firestone fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Magnus, pushing him back against the cage.

Magnus tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

and Firestone counters with a single leg into guard. Magnus didn't expect that.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Firestone lands a couple of elbows.
Firestone slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Let's hope that Firestone has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Firestone drops back looking for a leg! Magnus is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Magnus manages to kick Firestone off! Firestone jumps back into Magnus's guard.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Magnus throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Firestone escapes and throws Magnus's legs to the side, diving into side control!

Mark Firestone showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Magnus digs a right hand underneath Firestone's ribcage. Firestone let out a lung full of air as it connected.

An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Magnus.

Magnus is trying to stall.

Firestone seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Magnus does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Firestone might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Magnus kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
