PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mason Terell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Amir Zuka (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mason Terell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 20 - 7 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Amir Zuka!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, David Schapiro and Joseph Jones.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Terell fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Zuka on the side of the head.
Mason Terell seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Terell lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Terell blocks a head kick by Zuka.
Zuka attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
A chopping leg kick lands by Zuka.
Zuka throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Terell throws a body punch but Zuka moves out of range.
Terell checks a leg kick.
Terell fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Zuka keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Zuka shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
Terell looks to score with a jab to the body but Zuka is just out of range.
Zuka slips under a jab.
Terell shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Zuka sprawls well. Zuka wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Terell gets slowly back to his feet.
Zuka is looking to score with low kicks.

Zuka tries to work over Terell's front leg with a kick but Terell checks it.
Zuka swings away with a leg kick that misses.
Terell swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Terell looks to land a right hand but Zuka moved out of range.
Zuka tries to clinch there but Terell circles away.
Terell rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Zuka counters with a nice leg kick.
Terell tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Zuka was well out of range. Poor timing from Terell.

Terell gets a takedown into half guard.
Terell throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Terell seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Zuka does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Terell looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Terell is thwarting Zuka's attempts to control the position.

Terell is trying to work for a kimura but Zuka is defending well.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Terell is trying to control the action in half guard but Zuka is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Terell is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Zuka is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Terell throws a strike but Zuka avoids it easily and moves to full guard.

Terell stands up and waves to Zuka to follow him.
Terell misses with a body shot.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Zuka throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
Zuka throws a leg kick that misses.
Zuka takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Zuka tries to land a front kick but Terell steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Terell is looking to wear down Zuka with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.

Terell closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Terell lands in his opponent's guard.
Terell won't allow Zuka to get back to his feet.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Terell postures up.
Terell makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mason Terell dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Donk. Terell catches Zuka right on the button with a cross.
Terell checks a low kick from Zuka.
Terell scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Zuka doesn't seem bothered though.
Terell's corner calls for a 1-2. Terell obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Zuka looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Terell dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Sloppy strikes from Terell. Those never looked like landing.
Zuka lands with a kick to the ribs.
Terell lands with a shot to the body.
Terell throws a nice looking combination but Zuka bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Zuka throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Zuka pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Terell connects with a body shot.

Zuka uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Terell.
Mason Terell is winning the standup battle so far.
Zuka staying out of range there.
Zuka connects with an inside leg kick.
Zuka tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Terell moves out of range as Zuka throws a body kick.
Terell throws a shot from downtown. Zuka moves away and avoids it.
Terell throws a right hand that Zuka ducks under and follows up with a left that Zuka also avoids with ease.
Zuka turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Terell avoids the head kick by Zuka.
Zuka uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Terell.
Zuka throws a head kick but Terell moves out of range.
Terell checks a leg kick.
Zuka tries to close the distance and clinch but Terell swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Terell shoots in looking for a takedown but Zuka manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Terell's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Zuka is looking to chop away at Terell's legs.

Terell drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Terell won't allow Zuka to get back to his feet.
Terell is stalling in the full guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Terell accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Terell advances position into side control!
Terell throws a strike aimed at the side of Zuka's head but Zuka avoids it well.
Zuka can't do much from the bottom here.
Terell misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

Terell is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Zuka has escaped the position, nice work there.
Terell in side control, throwing shots but Zuka defends.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Zuka is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
Terell in the domination position with Zuka hanging on.

Terell tries for a kimura but Zuka is defending well.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Terell looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Mason Terell will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Zuka walks into a left hand.
Zuka lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
Zuka uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Terell.
Terell misses with a straight right.
Zuka drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Zuka defending well as Terell loads up on a big left hand.
Zuka slips a jab from Terell.
Terell on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Zuka. Zuka obviously looking to wear him down.
Terell throws a looping overhand right but Zuka ducks down to avoid it.
Zuka pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Terell takes a swing at Zuka's ribcage but misses.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Terell blocks a head kick by Zuka.
Terell misses the shot to the body.
Terell blocks the body kick.
Terell ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Zuka moves away.
The fight stays on the outside here - Zuka looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
A looping hook to the body misses from Terell. Zuka does a little dance to reset his feet.
A nice leg kick lands there from Zuka.
Zuka slaps away a takedown attempt from Terell, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Terell scores with a hook.
Terell will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Zuka fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Terell has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Terell throws an off balance right hand
and Zuka counters with a body kick.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Terell takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Zuka throws a nice outside leg kick.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Terell will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Terell takes a swing at Zuka's ribcage but misses.
Zuka lands a leg kick that knocks Terell off balance momentarily.
Terell misses with a telegraphed body shot
and Zuka counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Good work by Terell as he checks the leg kick.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Zuka, right into the meat.

Zuka throws a chopping leg kick but Terell manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
Terell throws a body punch but Zuka moves out of range.
Mason Terell is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Terell fails with a takedown attempt.
Zuka tries to land a leg kick but Terell saw it coming and moves away.

Zuka fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Terell, pushing him back against the cage.
Amir Zuka has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Zuka throws a knee to the head but misses.
Zuka lands a glancing elbow in the clinch.


It looks like Mason Terell has been cut.
Zuka using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Terell has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Terell goes for a takedown attempt but Zuka pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mason Terell. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Terell shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Zuka manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Terell postures up in Zuka's guard and throws a big left but Zuka blocks it.
Zuka controls Terell momentarily but Terell frees himself.
Zuka keeping moving, preventing Terell from controlling successfully.
Mason Terell overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Terell postures up in Zuka's guard and throws a big left but Zuka blocks it.

And that's the end of the fight!
Amir Zuka comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Terell has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
