Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Goku Son! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Russell Donahue! The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Frank Dennis and Alan Glass.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Donahue misses the shot to the body. Donahue connects with a jab. Son shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Donahue swings and misses with a shot to the body and Son counters with a single leg into guard. Donahue didn't expect that. The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work. Son drops back looking for a leg! Donahue is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Donahue manages to kick Son off! Son jumps back into Donahue's guard. Donahue looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Donahue had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Son defends it easily. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Son thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Son drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Donahue manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Son has Donahue in his guard. Donahue scoring with punches to the head and body. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Donahue trying to stand up but can't free himself from Son's guard. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Son is working an open guard so Donahue takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Donahue with a jab. Son tries for a takedown but Donahue sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Son shoots in looking for a takedown. Donahue tries to sprawl out of it but Son keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Donahue manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Goku Son. That's going to take a lot out of him. Donahue misses with an uppercut. Donahue throws a lazy right hand but Son sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Donahue misses the shot to the body. Donahue throws a combination. Son tries to block but a couple of punches get through. Son changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Donahue tries to avoid it but Son manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Donahue to the ground. Donahue escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Donahue connects with a crisp jab. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Son tries to score a power double leg takedown but Donahue sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Son somewhat. A momentary lapse in concentration from Donahue enables Son to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Donahue manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. Son trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Donahue wants to stand up but Son is controlling him.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Donahue is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Son drops back looking for a leg! Donahue is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Donahue manages to kick Son off! Son jumps back into Donahue's guard. Son pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Donahue is keeping the position for now. Son is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Son pushes down on Donahue's leg and manages to get into half guard. Son in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Donahue tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Son!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Goku Son! An out of breath Goku Son thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
