PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Gerlach Rutger (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Max Zero (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Zero has chosen José the Bronx Rican - Spittin' Narcicism as his entrance music. Gerlach Rutger had a look across the cage there at his opponent. He definitely means business

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 23 - 11 - 2, fighting out of Sydney, Gerlach Rutger!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 18 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Max Zero!
The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, John Mangel and Winston Howard.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Zero moves to clinch but Rutger breaks away

and Rutger counters with a nice double leg into side control. Zero won't be happy with that.
Zero is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Rutger has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Rutger controlling from side mount.
Zero is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Rutger is controlling him well.

Rutger prevents Zero from escaping the position.
Zero is looking to reverse the position.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Zero takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Zero is working to avoid the ground and pound but Rutger connects with a decent elbow.
Zero wants to get back to his feet but Rutger drags him back down.

Zero throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done!
Zero is looking to clinch but Rutger is avoiding it.

Rutger wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Zero drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Rutger manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Zero has Rutger in his guard.

Zero looking for a guillotine here but Rutger defends easily.
Rutger tries to free his leg and advance position but Zero is retaining full guard.

Rutger is working Zero over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Zero is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Rutger is aware though and is defending well.

Rutger avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Rutger chips away with some ground and pound.
Rutger stands up over Zero, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Zero looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Rutger lands a couple of elbows.
Rutger pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Zero is keeping the position for now.
Rutger has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Zero wants to get back to his feet but Rutger is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Zero is looking to sweep but instead, Rutger has passed into half guard.
Zero tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rutger tries to pass the half guard into mount. Zero knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Zero is staying active underneath Rutger, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Zero is trying to stand up here but Rutger is controlling him well.

Rutger is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Zero looks like he's trying to stand up.
Zero is refusing to be controlled, as Rutger sits in half guard.
Rutger prevents Zero from improving his position.
Zero is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Rutger scores with a couple of nice shots.

Zero kicks Rutger off and gets back to his feet.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Zero wants to clinch but Rutger slips to the side

so Rutger counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Rutger slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Zero tries to land a sweep but no joy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gerlach Rutger dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


The fight stays on the outside here - Zero looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Zero throws a nice looking combination but Rutger bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Rutger fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Zero forces Rutger back against the cage and clinches.
A nice right hand lands inside from Zero.


It looks like Gerlach Rutger has been cut.

Zero breaks from the clinch.
Zero thuds his shin into the meat of Rutger's side.
Rutger keeps the fight on the outside.
Zero dives in and grabs Rutger's left leg, looking for a takedown. Rutger pushes down on Zero's head and hops out.
A looping hook to the body misses from Zero. Rutger does a little dance to reset his feet.
Zero swings and misses with a hook to the body.

Zero throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Rutger's waist but Rutger gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Zero off to one side.
No luck for Rutger with that takedown attempt.
Zero fails in his attempt to clinch.
Nice body kick there by Zero.

Rutger drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Zero wants to get back to his feet but Rutger drags him back down.
Zero manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Zero is pressing down on Rutger's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Rutger is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Rutger works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Rutger lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Rutger lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Zero pushes Rutger off looking to stand but Rutger dives back in and keeps control.

The fighters are battling for position here. Zero manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Zero working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Rutger doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Rutger manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Zero wants to stand up but Rutger is controlling him.
Rutger trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Rutger wants to control from the top but Zero keeps moving.
Rutger's corner is telling him to maintain position.

We're going to have a standup here because Gerlach Rutger wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Rutger.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gerlach Rutger. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Zero is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Zero lands with a kick to the ribs.
Zero tries to clinch but Rutger moves out of range.
Zero tries to close the distance and clinch up but Rutger swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Rutger drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Zero had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Rutger defends it easily.
Rutger is pushing down on Zero's leg trying to pass to half guard. Zero is fighting to maintain full guard but Rutger has managed to sneak the leg through.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Rutger is keen to just control but Zero is a slippery customer.
Rutger prevents Zero from improving his position.
Zero tries to kick Rutger off but Rutger keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Max Zero will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The cut man is working on Gerlach Rutger's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Zero wants to clinch but Rutger slips to the side

and Rutger counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Zero's guard now.
Zero is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Rutger is controlling him.

Zero isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Rutger stacks Zero on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Rutger!
Gerlach Rutger overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
You can see the frustration on Zero's face as Rutger controls the position.
Rutger lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Zero down.
Zero is not content to let Rutger control the position.
Rutger prevents Zero from escaping the position.
Zero takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Zero wants to get back to his feet but Rutger is dominant here and he's now got Zero's back!

Rutger is working the ground and pound here and the referee is taking a close look at Zero. He must escape soon or this one will be stopped.
Rutger has his opponent trapped and is landing shots. Not a good position for Zero.
Zero holding both Rutger 's hands and preventing any damage.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Rutger is punishing Zero with strikes - can he finish him?!

Rutger connects with a series of strikes and the referee is calling for Zero to escape the position.
Rutger lands with a big left hand that may well have hurt his opponent. Can Zero hold on?!


Zero is rocked!
A bit of a pause in the action here. Rutger controlling the positon.
Zero is still in real trouble! Can Rutger finish him?
Rutger is landing big shots and Zero is squirming looking to escape! He can't escape though and the ref jumps in to end the fight!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:30 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Gerlach Rutger!
A less than humble Gerlach Rutger misjudged his post fight interview somewhat and came across a little too arrogant whilst trying to hype up his own abilities.
