PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Simeon Grundy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jon Drexler (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Grundy comes to the cage accompanied by Enter Sandman. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jon Drexler!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Jack Bonds and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Grundy buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Grundy lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
Grundy has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Drexler finds it's way round the side to connect with Grundy's head.
Drexler throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Grundy.
Grundy scores with a nice head shot.
Grundy has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Drexler.
Drexler scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
Drexler moves in looking to clinch but Grundy pushes him off.

Drexler drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Grundy tries to get back to half guard but can't.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Drexler cracks Grundy with a big elbow.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Grundy is looking to regain half guard here but Drexler keeps moving and retains side control.

Drexler lands a nice forearm strike.

Grundy is looking for a sweep.
Drexler really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Grundy. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Drexler is trying to get an arm triangle but Grundy is defending well.
Drexler cracks Grundy with a big elbow.
The referee asks Drexler politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Drexler prefers to stall for the moment though.

Grundy manages to get back to half guard.
Drexler is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Drexler wants to pass the guard but Grundy is defending well.
Grundy tries to get to full guard but Drexler has control of the leg.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Drexler in particular looking to stall.

Grundy is desperately trying to improve his position but Drexler has a good base and remains in mount.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Grundy tries to hold on but Drexler postures up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Drexler rushes Grundy and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Drexler wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Grundy looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Grundy lands an elbow inside that Drexler shrugs off.
Grundy prevents the takedown attempt.
Drexler will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Grundy up against the cage.

Drexler escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Drexler fails in his attempt to clinch.
Grundy throws a quick inside leg kick.
Drexler fails with an attempt to clinch.
Grundy throws a push kick but Drexler slaps the foot to one side.
Grundy lets loose with a powerful body kick. Drexler will feel that in the morning.
Grundy is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Drexler lands a head shot.
Drexler circles away from the clinch attempt.

Grundy misses with a hook
enabling Drexler to counter with a crisp jab.

Drexler moves into the clinch successfully.
Drexler wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Grundy has him pressed against the cage.
Grundy is trying to maintain a safe position but Drexler gets an underhook and turns Grundy into the cage.
Grundy wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Grundy connects with a nasty looking knee right to Drexler's face.

Drexler has Grundy pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Drexler pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Grundy tumbling to the mat - Drexler dives into Grundy's guard.

Grundy escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Drexler gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Drexler postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Drexler pushing down on Grundy's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Drexler slows the pace down in half guard.
Grundy tries to roll over but Drexler keeps him under control.
Drexler is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Grundy is trying to get back to full guard.
Drexler takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Drexler drops an elbow to the side of Grundy's head.
Grundy is looking for a sweep. Drexler is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Drexler content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Let's hope that Drexler has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Grundy has hold of Drexler's hands but Drexler slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Grundy looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.

Drexler is working for a kimura but Grundy is defending it quite comfortably.
Drexler is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Drexler looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Drexler looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Grundy with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jon Drexler showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Grundy shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Drexler but Drexler pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Drexler moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Grundy has worked his arm free - good work by Grundy!
Grundy manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Drexler is concentrating on defense, preventing Grundy from advancing position.

Grundy is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Grundy blocks the strikes from Drexler.

I've got Drexler winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
