Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Wesley Mathews! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jason Miller! The judges for this bout are Ivan Kurochkin, Igor Prikhodko and Vladimir Khabensky.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mathews closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon. Mathews lands an elbow. Mathews lands an elbow. Mathews has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Mathews works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head. Mathews grinds an elbow into Miller's temple. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Mathews landing a few strikes. Mathews lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Miller down.
Miller is pushing Mathews's head away, looking to escape. Mathews manages to hold on to the position though. A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet. Mathews lands a few punches from side control.
Miller is rocked! Mathews scoring with punches and elbows. Miller is still in real trouble! Can Mathews finish him? Mathews thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Miller is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Mathews asserts his dominance and retains side control. Mathews cracks Miller with a big elbow. Mathews scores with a big shot from side control... and another... and another! Oh Miller is done here - save him referee! More strikes land and eventually the ref does step in and Mathews can finally stop beating on his defenseless opponent!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Wesley Mathews! Wesley Mathews decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
