PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kasey Ballard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Zack Lovell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ballard comes to the cage accompanied by Eye of the Tiger. Kasey Ballard has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kasey Ballard!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Zack Lovell!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Hogan, Hugh Johnson and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Ballard gets a takedown into half guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Lovell is trying to stand.
Ballard is looking to pass Lovell's guard but actually Lovell recovers to full guard.
Lovell wants to stand but Ballard is controlling the position.

Lovell pushes Ballard off and gets back to his feet.

Ballard clinches up with Lovell and pushes him back against the cage.
Ballard has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Lovell avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Lovell tries to pull guard but Ballard holds him up against the cage and eventually Lovell drops back down to his feet.

Lovell tries to break free but Ballard pushes him back against the cage.

Ballard gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Ballard engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Lovell should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Ballard seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Lovell for as long as he can get away with.
Ballard trying to control the position from guard on top but Lovell is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Kasey Ballard.
Lovell lands with a nice body kick.
Lovell swings for the body but Ballard moves out of range.
Ballard slips under a jab from Lovell.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Ballard avoids the head kick by Lovell.
Lovell throws a head kick but Ballard moves out of range.

Ballard has taken the fight to the clinch.
Lovell wants to get back to striking at distance but Ballard won't allow it.
Lovell has had enough of the clinch but Ballard keeps him there for the moment.
Lovell tries to break free but Ballard pushes him back against the cage.
Ballard lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.

Ballard breaks the clinch.
A head kick by Lovell misses

and Ballard counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Lovell lands a knee to the body.

Ballard is looking for a takedown.

Ballard decides to pull guard.
Ballard keeping moving, preventing Lovell from controlling successfully.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Lovell's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Ballard manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Ballard avoids the head kick by Lovell.
Lovell looks gassed!
Ballard slips a jab and a cross from Lovell.
Lovell misses with a double jab.
Ballard swinging wildly here.
Lovell blocks the body kick.

Lovell tries to clinch up.
Zack Lovell seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Lovell gets tackled into the cage by Ballard. Ballard maintains the clinch.
Ballard has Lovell pressed against the cage, preventing Lovell from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Lovell wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Ballard has him pressed against the cage.

Ballard breaks from the clinch.
Ballard shoots in for a takedown but Lovell shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kasey Ballard. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Ballard blocks a head kick by Lovell.
Ballard fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

That was a close round but I would say that Kasey Ballard will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Lovell throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Ballard takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Lovell misses with a double jab.
Ballard pulls out of a head kick attempt.
The crowd cheers as Lovell lands an impressive looking overhand right. Ballard doesn't seem phased though.
Lovell tries to clinch but Ballard is having none of it.
Lovell is breathing heavily.
Lovell throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Ballard's head.
Ballard tries to score a power double leg takedown but Lovell sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Ballard somewhat.
Lovell throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Kasey Ballard is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Lovell fails in his attempt to clinch.
A punch combination from Lovell misses.
Ballard takes a kick to the side of the head.
Ballard shoots for a takedown but Lovell saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Ballard clinches up with Lovell and pushes him back against the cage.
Lovell misses with an elbow strike.
Lovell tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Ballard breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Ballard closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Ballard is working for takedown but Lovell is calmly controlling the position for now.

Ballard keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Lovell's efforts to push away.
Ballard is pushing Lovell up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.

Ballard prevents Lovell from breaking the clinch.
Lovell looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Ballard digs a right hand into Lovell's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Lovell's gas tank.

Ballard knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Lovell on the ground.

Ballard is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Lovell pulls Ballard into guard.
Ballard will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Ballard stays in close to Lovell's body and controls the position.
Lovell manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Ballard is desperately trying to improve his position but Lovell has a good base and remains in mount.
Lovell wants to control the pace but Ballard is squirming around nicely.
Ballard wants to hold on but Lovell pushes him away.
Lovell is trying to control here but Ballard has managed to regain half guard.
Ballard is not content to let Lovell control the position.

Ballard is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Lovell pulls his head out easily.

Ballard throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
A combination from Lovell does no damage.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Ballard controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Lovell not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

That was a close second round but I would say that Kasey Ballard will probably get the nod.

You can see the frustration on Lovell's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Ballard is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Lovell will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

Lovell is letting Ballard control him for a moment.

Lovell doesn't manage to clinch there - Ballard circles away.
Lovell throws a sloppy head kick and Ballard moves out of range easily.

Ballard closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Lovell did well to prevent Ballard getting side control.
Lovell wants to control but Ballard is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Ballard throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Well, if Ballard is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Lovell wants to get back to his feet.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Lovell wants to get back to full guard but Ballard has passed into side control.
You can see the frustration on Lovell's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Lovell can't do much from the bottom here.
Zack Lovell has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Ballard decides to stand back up.
Ballard shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Lovell but Lovell pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Ballard shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Ballard showed some decent athleticism there.

Ballard decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Ballard shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Lovell as he jumps to the side.
Lovell misses with a body shot.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Lovell has a takedown stuffed.
Ballard shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Lovell as he avoids it easily.

And that's the end of the fight!
Kasey Ballard showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Ballard, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
