Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Paul Daley! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Aleksej Aleksejev! The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Dmitry Maklakov and Aleksandr Martynov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Aleksejev dives in and scores a takedown into Daley's guard. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Aleksejev makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Aleksejev is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Aleksejev looking to pass the guard. Aleksejev sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Daley's guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Daley looking for submissions off his back. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Daley avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Aleksejev.
That's one minute gone in the round. Aleksejev throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Aleksejev is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen. Aleksejev is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound. Aleksejev is taking a breather. Daley says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Daley is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Aleksejev tries to stand and escape but Daley actually recovers to full guard. Aleksejev content to stall in guard here. Let's hope that Aleksejev has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Aleksej Aleksejev. Daley stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Daley wants it to stay on the feet.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Aleksejev gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Aleksejev jumps guard.
Daley wants to control from the top but Aleksejev keeps moving. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
We're going to have a standup here because Paul Daley wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Aleksejev with a poor takedown and Daley counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Aleksejev!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Aleksejev is desperately trying to improve his position but Daley has a good base and remains in mount. Daley trying to control but he's not successful this time. Aleksejev tries to lock up and control but Daley gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Aleksej Aleksejev dominated that round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Aleksejev misses with a straight right. Aleksejev fails with a takedown attempt. Daley displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Aleksejev. Aleksejev closes the distance and clinches up with Daley, looking for a takedown. Aleksejev pushes Daley against the cage but Daley circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Paul Daley has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Aleksej Aleksejev. Aleksejev works the jab nicely. Daley showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Aleksejev.
That's one minute gone in the round. Aleksejev fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Aleksejev is breathing heavily. Aleksejev is looking to clinch. Aleksej Aleksejev seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Aleksejev shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Daley sprawls well. Daley wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Aleksejev gets slowly back to his feet. Paul Daley is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Aleksejev tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Daley manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Daley swats away the attempt to clinch by Aleksejev. Aleksejev clinches up with Daley and pushes him back against the cage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Daley is trying to break the clinch but Aleksejev has him pressed against the cage. Aleksejev wants to take the fight to the mat but Daley manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch. Aleksejev is trying to pull guard but Daley has him pressed against the cage. Daley is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Aleksejev to keep the fight standing. Daley breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
No luck for Daley with that takedown attempt. Daley displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Aleksejev. Aleksejev with a lazy takedown attempt and Daley counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Daley trying to control but Aleksejev is working from the bottom.
The ref stands the fighters back up because Paul Daley just wasn't active enough. Aleksejev tries to score a power double leg takedown but Daley sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Aleksejev somewhat. Aleksejev drives through with a takedown into Daley's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Aleksejev avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
This has been an exciting period of action! Aleksejev content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Daley has locked up a guillotine! Daley's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Aleksejev is holding on here and Daley must be using up a lot of energy. Aleksejev has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Daley gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!
