The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Carter feints and as Niaz raises his hands in defense, Carter changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Carter postures up in Niaz's guard and throws a big left but Niaz blocks it. Carter throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Niaz works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Carter is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Niaz is trying to control the position but Carter postures up. Carter trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Carter wants to control from the top but Niaz keeps moving. Carter landing with the ground and pound.
That's one minute gone in the round. Niaz preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Carter in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Carter passes Niaz's left leg - he's now in half guard. Carter sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Niaz defending well though. Niaz wants to control the action here but instead Carter manages to pass to full mount! Carter is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Niaz can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Niaz can do anything to dispel that myth. Carter with the ground and pound from mount.

Carter is landing with some decent strikes but Niaz is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Carter connects with a couple of good shots from mount.

It looks like Dick Niaz has been cut.
That's three minutes gone in the round. A big strike lands for Carter! That's really hurt Niaz and he's turned his back - Carter keeps firing away and the ref dives in to stop the fight! Carter jumps to his feet to celebrate the victory!
