PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Alexi Laiho (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cassius Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Laiho comes into the arena with Lookin' Out My Backdoor blaring out of the sound system. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
14 - 9 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Alexi Laiho! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
9 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Cassius Penn! The judges for this bout are Igor Prikhodko, Illya Tyunina and Ivan Kurochkin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Penn connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head. Laiho throws the left hand but Penn avoids the punch easily. Penn slips a jab from Laiho. Laiho scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard. Laiho takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Laiho throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Penn with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Laiho to score with a decent uppercut. Laiho misses with a hook. Penn ducked under it nicely. Penn swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

and Penn counters with a three punch combo that has Laiho backing up. Laiho nods at Penn to acknowledge the strikes. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Penn saw that one coming. Laiho throws the left hand but Penn avoids the punch easily. Laiho thows a left - swing and a miss! Laiho lands a body shot.
Laiho takes one on the button. Laiho looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Penn shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Penn looking for a guillotine from mount but Laiho is having none of it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Laiho tries to buck Penn off but he can't manage it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Penn tries to control but Laiho wriggling away. Penn has hold of Laiho's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Laiho manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Laiho is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Penn is working close to his opponent, looking to work a submission by the looks of things. Oh, he's managed to get a guillotine from mount as his opponent reached up! That looks tiiiiight! Will he tap? YES, he's tapped! Impressive submission by Penn!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Cassius Penn!
