PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Gary Barlow (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Harrold Branch (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Branch is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Cocaine Blues, Johnny Cash. Harrold Branch will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Gary Barlow!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Harrold Branch!
The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Skip Squint and Summer Carpenter.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Branch throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Gary Barlow seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Barlow tries for a takedown but Branch circles away easily

and Branch counters by clinching up.

Barlow is fighting off a takedown attempt but Branch is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Barlow to the mat. Barlow regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Barlow is looking for a triangle but Branch pushes his legs off easily.
Barlow keeping moving, preventing Branch from controlling successfully.

Barlow looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Branch stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Barlow swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Barlow has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Branch can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Barlow looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Branch wants to pass the guard but Barlow is keeping the position.

Barlow looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Branch passes into side control.
Branch remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Barlow is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Barlow is desperately trying to improve his position but Branch has a good base and remains in mount.
Branch tries to control but Barlow wriggling away.
Branch controlling the position easily from mount.
Branch's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Branch looking to control but Barlow is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Harrold Branch was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Branch wants to clinch

so Barlow counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Barlow drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Branch dives on top into guard.
Branch slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Branch trying to control the position from guard on top but Barlow is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Barlow working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Branch has passed into half guard!
Branch wants to free his trapped foot but Barlow is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Branch wants to take a breather but Barlow is having none of it.
Branch lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Barlow has guillotine here! It looks pretty tight! Could this be all over! No, Branch escapes and passes into side control at the same time. Nice work there by Branch!
Branch is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Barlow will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Barlow tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Branch presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
Branch controlling the pace for now.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Branch trying to control but Barlow is having none of it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

and Branch connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Well, if Branch is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Branch looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Barlow manages to get to full guard.

Barlow is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Branch defends well.

Branch trying to control but Barlow is working from the bottom.
Branch wants to pass the guard but Barlow is keeping the position.
Harrold Branch has got the better of the ground game so far.
Branch wants to control from the top but Barlow keeps moving.

Barlow had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Branch defends it easily.

Barlow has his foot on Branch's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Branch works his way back into a safe position though.

Branch wants to control from the top but Barlow keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Harrold Branch.
Branch pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.

Barlow closes the distance and clinches up with Branch, looking for a takedown. Barlow pushes Branch against the cage but Branch circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

and Branch counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gary Barlow. That's going to take a lot out of him.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Branch rushes Barlow and presses him up against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Harrold Branch showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Branch misses the jab.

Branch closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Barlow actively working from the bottom here.

Barlow is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Branch pulls his head out easily.
Branch wants to pass to mount but Barlow is defending the position.

Branch is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Branch wants to control but Barlow is keeping him busy.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Branch controlling the pace.
Branch wants to take a breather but Barlow is having none of it.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Harrold Branch has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Barlow manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Branch on his heels. He'll look to pass Branch's guard now, I'm sure.

Barlow avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Branch looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Barlow is defending well. Branch quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Barlow has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Branch celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:50 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Harrold Branch!
