PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Diego Santana (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jon Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Santana comes to the cage accompanied by Apaga mais não bate( Jiu-jitsu ). Jon Jones is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Diego Santana!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jon Jones!
The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Mauricio Rocha and Daniel Cesar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Santana darts in and clinches Jones up against the cage.
A frustrated look appears on Jones's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Jones has Santana pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Jones pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Santana tumbling to the mat - Jones dives into Santana's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Santana keeping moving, preventing Jones from controlling successfully.
Santana is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Jones is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Jones wants to pass the guard but Santana is keeping the position.
Santana has momentary wrist control but Jones slips an elbow through the middle.
Jones wants to control from the top but Santana keeps moving.

Jones wants to stand and escape but instead Santana has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Jones wants to sweep but no luck.

Jones looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Jones pulls Santana in close to prevent any damage.

Santana stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Santana changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Jones looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Santana is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Jones has escaped the position, nice work there.
Jones dodges the ground and pound from Santana.

Jones is looking for a sweep.

Santana looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Jones is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Santana's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Jones is trying to control but can't.

Santana is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Santana is looking to take a break and control but Jones is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Jones regains full guard. Nicely done.
Jones tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Santana wants to control from the top but Jones keeps moving.
Santana wants to stand but Jones is controlling his posture from full guard.
Santana is breathing heavily.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Diego Santana wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Jones scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Jones scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Jones slips a nice elbow through Santana's hands, connecting with Santana's forehead.
Jones works his foot free and advances to mount.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Jones lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

Jones displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Santana.
Santana walks into a left hand.
Jones scores with a hook to the body. Santana takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Santana closes this distance looking for a takedown but Jones circles away.

Jones shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Santana napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Santana is not in a great position here, taking some shots.
Jones is chipping away with strikes.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Santana is trying to improve his position.
Santana prevents Jones from moving into mount.
Jones remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Jones lands a decent elbow from side control.
Santana is looking for a sweep.

Jones stands up.
Jon Jones seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Jones throws a right hand that Santana ducks under and follows up with a left that Santana also avoids with ease.

Santana gets caught napping as Jones dives in and scores a takedown. Santana manages to retain guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Jones stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Santana swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Jones gets to his feet. Santana looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Jones throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Santana slips a jab and a cross from Jones.
Jones shoots in for a double leg but Santana sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Santana gets caught napping as Jones dives in and scores a takedown. Santana manages to retain guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Santana has his foot on Jones's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Jones works his way back into a safe position though.
Jones has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Santana is proving hard to escape from.
Jones must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Santana looking for a guillotine here but Jones defends easily.

Santana controls Jones momentarily but Jones frees himself.
Jones trying to control but Santana is working from the bottom.
Santana is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Jones drops back looking for a leg! Santana is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Santana manages to kick Jones off! Jones jumps back into Santana's guard.

Hammerfist, elbow! yells Jones's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Jones throwing strikes but missing.
Santana looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Jones trying to stand up but can't free himself from Santana's guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Jones passes Santana's left leg - he's now in half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jon Jones showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Santana avoids a punch combination nicely.
Santana throws a head kick that misses.
Santana showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Jones.
Jones pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Santana back to the cage. Jones follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.
Santana shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Jones as he jumps to the side.
Jones misses with a double jab.

Jones shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Santana's guard.
Santana controls Jones momentarily but Jones frees himself.
Jones trying to control but Santana is working from the bottom.

Jones looking to pass the guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Jones wants to control from the top but Santana keeps moving.
Jones controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Jon Jones has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Horrible takedown by Jones or perhaps it was just good defense by Santana which made him look bad.
Jones misses with a few strikes there.

Santana keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Jones.
Santana misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Nice takedown defense from Santana. No joy for Jones on that attempt.
Santana tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Jones is able to avoid easily.

Santana fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Jones to the ground. Santana is now in Jones's guard.
Santana advances position into side control!
Jones is looking to regain half guard here but Santana keeps moving and retains side control.
Jones is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Jones is trying to control Santana's posture but Santana avoids it.

Jones is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Santana stands up and beckons Jones to his feet.
Santana stuffs the takedown.
Diego Santana has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jon Jones.

Santana instigates a clinch.
A bit of stalling here from Santana.

Santana drags the fight down to the ground.
Jones has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Santana is proving hard to escape from.
Jones looking to sit in guard and control but Santana gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Santana gets to his feet. Jones looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Jones fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Santana looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Santana tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Jones swivels and escapes.
Diego Santana has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Jon Jones is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Jones scores with a one two! Santana had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Jon Jones.
I've got Jones winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
