PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rip James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank Smeer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Frank Smeer told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rip James!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Frank Smeer!
The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Daniel Cesar and Matheus Silva.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smeer throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Smeer misses with a series of wild punches.
James fails to land with a series of punches.
James checks a low kick from Smeer.
James tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Smeer tries to land a front kick but James steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
James defending well as Smeer loads up on a big left hand.
Smeer throws a low kick, looking for James's leg but James calmly moves out of range.

James feints and as Smeer raises his hands in defense, James changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
James sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Smeer's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
James is looking to advance position but Smeer won't allow it.
The fighters are battling for position here. Smeer manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
James stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Smeer swivels though and keeps the full guard.

James drops back looking for a leg! Smeer is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Smeer manages to kick James off! James jumps back into Smeer's guard.
Smeer keeping moving, preventing James from controlling successfully.
Smeer is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Smeer can't keep his opponent in guard - James advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

James is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
James is looking to take a break and control but Smeer is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
James tries to pass to full mount but Smeer defends it.
Smeer wants to get back to full guard.

Smeer with the active half guard here but James passes nicely into side control.
Smeer looks gassed!

James is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Smeer is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Smeer takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Smeer regains half guard.

James is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Smeer defends it well.
James lands with a punch from half guard.
Smeer missing with punches from the bottom.
Smeer wants to get back to full guard.

Smeer looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

Smeer connecting with a few gentle strikes.
James passes to side control.
Smeer is not content to let James control the position.
Smeer tries to bench press James off him but James keeps the position.

James tries for a kimura but Smeer is defending well.

Smeer gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
Smeer is looking to improve his position but James isn't that keen on the idea.
James putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound!

James swings around for an armbar and he's got it! Wow, that came out of nowhere! What a finish!
