PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Matt Hughes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Evgen Konstantinov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hughes comes into the arena with A Country Boy Can Survive blaring out of the sound system. Evgen Konstantinov is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Matt Hughes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 20 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Evgen Konstantinov!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Konstantinov scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Konstantinov tries to stand but Hughes is controlling his head.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Evgen Konstantinov was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Konstantinov fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Hughes, pushing him back against the cage.

Konstantinov has hold of one of Hughes's legs. Hughes is fighting the takedown attempt but Konstantinov gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

Konstantinov postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Hughes is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Konstantinov, into his guard.

Evgen Konstantinov dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Hughes shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Konstantinov's guard.

Hughes trying to keep a closed guard but Konstantinov is proving a slippery customer.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Konstantinov goes for a high kick. It partially lands.

Konstantinov manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Hughes on his heels. He'll look to pass Hughes's guard now, I'm sure.
Konstantinov has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Hughes is proving hard to escape from.
Konstantinov lands a couple of elbows.

Konstantinov throws a strike but Hughes rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Hughes stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Konstantinov swivels though and keeps the full guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Hughes wants to control from the top but Konstantinov keeps moving.
Hughes stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Konstantinov swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Konstantinov has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Hughes can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Matt Hughes just wasn't active enough.
Hughes shoots and misses

and Konstantinov counters with a takedown into side control.
Konstantinov with the ground and pound but Hughes regains half guard under the barage of strikes.
Hughes regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Konstantinov.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Evgen Konstantinov showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Konstantinov drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Hughes manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Konstantinov has Hughes in his guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Matt Hughes.

Hughes avoids a series of strikes thrown by Konstantinov.
Konstantinov is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Hughes can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

Konstantinov wants to control the action but instead Hughes gets a body lock and reverses into Konstantinov's guard! Nice work!

Evgen Konstantinov is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Konstantinov is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Evgen Konstantinov comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Konstantinov has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
