The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gat fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Gat throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Akers tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Gat is in Akers's guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Akers can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Gat controls the pace. Akers wants to stand up but Gat is controlling him. Gat is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
OK we're going to have a standup here. Johnny Gat hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Akers throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Gat on the side of the head. Gat looks gassed! The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Gat fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Akers to the ground. Gat is now in Akers's guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gat controls from within his opponent's guard. We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. It looks like Gat might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Johnny Gat wasn't active enough on the ground. Akers misses with a wild combination.
Akers connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Akers lands a nice shot to the body.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Akers catches Gat with a right, a left, a right. It's raining punches and Gat forgot an umbrella! Another punch and he's down. This one is over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:23 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Shaun Akers!
