Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, William Cruz! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Demian Maia! The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, William Peck and Ian Loll.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Cruz throws a body kick that misses. Cruz scores with a takedown into Maia's guard. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Cruz wants to stand but Maia is controlling his posture from full guard. Cruz trying to control but Maia is working from the bottom. Cruz looking to sit in guard and control but Maia gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cruz looking to hit a scissor sweep but Maia is one step ahead there. Cruz will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Maia preventing the sweep. Cruz is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Cruz is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Maia is aware though and is defending well. Maia controlling from the top position.

Demian Maia has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet. Cruz moves into the clinch. Cruz manages to break the clinch.

Maia has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Cruz is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet. Maia looks gassed! Cruz pulls guard effortlessly. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Maia pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Cruz is keeping the position for now. Maia controlling from the top position.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Demian Maia hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Cruz shoots in for a takedown but Maia shows good takedown defense. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for William Cruz. That's going to take a lot out of him. Cruz misses with a head kick.
Cruz scores to the head and body with a nice combination! Cruz shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Maia counters with a takedown into side control. This has been an exciting period of action! The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Maia moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that William Cruz will probably get the nod. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Cruz wants to land a leg kick but Maia is out of range. Cruz shoots in and gets a takedown into Maia's guard. Cruz wants to control from the top but Maia keeps moving. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon. Cruz is really struggling to control Maia but he's trying to hold on to the position.
We're going to have a standup here because William Cruz wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Cruz fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cruz gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Maia counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Maia. Maia is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Maia is breathing heavily. Cruz is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Maia stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cruz swivels though and keeps the full guard. Maia slips nicely into half guard.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Cruz fails with a takedown attempt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for William Cruz. That's going to take a lot out of him.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Cruz shoots for a double leg takedown but Maia sprawls well. He's pushed Cruz's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Cruz clinches up against the cage. Cruz pulls guard effortlessly. Maia controlling from the top position. Let's hope that Maia has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. Maia sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Cruz's guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Maia is taking a breather. Cruz says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work. Maia's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Demian Maia. Cruz closes this distance looking for a takedown but Maia circles away. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Cruz tries for a takedown but Maia sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Demian Maia showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.
Cruz shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Maia napping and manages to drive through into side control! Maia manages to work his way to half guard, despite Cruz's best efforts. Cruz is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Cruz is keen to just control but Maia is a slippery customer. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Cruz is stalling here. Maia is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Cruz seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Maia has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work. Maia advances to mount. Maia avoids the attempt from Cruz to control. Both fighters are breathing heavily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Maia content just to control the position here. Cruz tries to hold on but Maia pushes him away. Maia looking to control and managing it successfully. Cruz is wriggling around trying to escape.
