PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jon Fitch (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Austin Simmons (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Fitch comes to the cage accompanied by Till I Collapse- Eminem. Simmons has chosen Nightmare as his entrance music. Austin Simmons struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 171.4lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. Both fighters look pumped up here. Let's hope this is a good fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jon Fitch!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Austin Simmons!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Trevor Gratis and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Simmons takes one on the button.


It looks like Austin Simmons has been cut.
Simmons shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Fitch sprawls well. Fitch wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Simmons gets slowly back to his feet.
Fitch displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Simmons.
Fitch tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Simmons was well out of range. Poor timing from Fitch.
Simmons shoots and misses

so Fitch counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Jon Fitch has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Austin Simmons.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Simmons keeping full guard, as Fitch tries to pass.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Fitch got a little sloppy there for a moment and Simmons has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Fitch has managed to get both his arms back between Simmons's legs - danger averted.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Fitch postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Fitch chips away with some ground and pound.
Simmons wants to sweep but no luck.
Fitch working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Simmons's head.

Simmons keeping moving, preventing Fitch from controlling successfully.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Fitch looking to pass the guard.
Fitch has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Fitch makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Simmons is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Fitch defends well.
Simmons looks gassed!
Fitch passes Simmons's left leg - he's now in half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Fitch is looking to take a break and control but Simmons is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Fitch seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Fitch is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Simmons's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.
Fitch content just to control the position here.

Fitch has control of Simmons's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Simmons regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Fitch breaks from Simmons's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Fitch scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Simmons?


Simmons is rocked!
Fitch in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.
Simmons is still in real trouble! Can Fitch finish him?

Fitch working from mount. He moves in close and looks like he might be going for an arm triangle... He's hopped off to the side and he's transitioned into an Anaconda choke. Simmons turning a nasty shade of purple. He's refusing to tap but he's gone! He's out! The ref rips Fitch off and cradles Simmons's limp body as Fitch celebrates with his corner.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:50 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Anaconda Choke). Jon Fitch!
A relieved looking Jon Fitch thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
