Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Salvador Newman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sydney Fife (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Salvador Newman! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Sydney Fife! The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Newman fails with the takedown. Newman shoots in looking for a takedown but Fife manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Newman's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. Newman fails with a takedown attempt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Salvador Newman. That's going to take a lot out of him. Newman gets the takedown into side control. Fife tries to improve position but can't. Fife prevents Newman from moving into mount. Fife holding on. Newman misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Newman throws an elbow but Fife slips to the side and avoids it well. Newman has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Fife is not content to let Newman control the position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Newman controlling the position. Fife is trying to get back to half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Newman stands up and we're back to a striking position. A head kick misses from Fife. Fife throws a right and a left that Newman avoids nicely. Fife stuffs the takedown. Fife looks to land a combination but Newman avoids it well. Newman tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Fife swivels and escapes. Fife misses with a jab, cross combination.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Horrible takedown by Newman or perhaps it was just good defense by Fife which made him look bad. Newman looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Newman sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Fife defending well though. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Newman missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Fife really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Newman. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Newman content to control rather than advance.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Newman's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Fife throws a series of punches but Newman avoids them all with ease. Newman shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Newman shoots in and drives through. Fife sprawls well. Newman throws a right hand that Fife ducks under and follows up with a left that Fife also avoids with ease. A jab from Fife does it's job there. Fife slaps away a takedown attempt from Newman, before circling back to the center of the mat. Newman doesn't succeed with the takedown and Fife counters with a one-two to the body. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Salvador Newman. That's going to take a lot out of him. Excellent takedown into side control there by Newman. Fife is trying to get back to half guard. This has been an exciting period of action! Fife wants to control but Newman postures up.
That's one minute gone in the round. Fife seems a little lost for a moment, as Newman dominates the positioning. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Newman working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter. Newman wants to control but Fife is keeping him busy.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Salvador Newman. A head kick misses from Newman. Newman is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The fight stays on the outside here - Newman looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Salvador Newman seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Newman fails with a takedown attempt. Fife rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Newman moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Fife misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Newman fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Fife to the ground. Newman is now in Fife's guard. Newman looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Newman wants to control from the top but Fife keeps moving.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Salvador Newman wasn't doing enough on the ground. Fife lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Newman circles away quickly and effectively. Fife throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Fife slips a jab and a cross from Newman.
Fife defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Newman. Sydney Fife seems to be getting the better of the standup. Fife swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Newman counters with a shoot takedown. Fife fights it but they end up in guard. Fife is breathing heavily. Fife keeping moving, preventing Newman from controlling successfully. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Newman seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Newman postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Salvador Newman dominated that second round. That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!
Fife throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Fife misses with a body kick. Fife moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot. Fife swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Newman on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot. A combination from Fife does no damage. Newman fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Fife, pushing him back against the cage. Newman lands an elbow inside that Fife shrugs off. Newman breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Newman takes one to the chin there. Newman shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Fife as he jumps to the side. Newman takes the fight into the clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Fife wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Fife misses with a hook from the clinch. Fife is trying to break the clinch but Newman has him pressed against the cage. Fife is looking to break free of the clinch but Newman has double underhooks. Fife wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee. Fife is trying to break the clinch but Newman has him pressed against the cage. Fife escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Fife misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Newman shoots in but Fife avoids the takedown attempt easily. Newman moves forwards but Fife connects with a nice, crisp jab. Fife takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Newman looks for a takedown but Fife sprawls well. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Salvador Newman. That's going to take a lot out of him. Newman throws a right and a left that Fife avoids nicely.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Newman lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!

This has been an exciting period of action! Newman takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
A swing and a miss from Fife. Fife throws a leg kick and Newman counters with a takedown into side control. Newman takes a little break here. Fife wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well. Salvador Newman overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Newman working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Newman wants to control but Fife is keeping him busy. Sydney Fife has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Newman tries to move into full mount but can't pass Fife's legs. Fife is not content to let Newman control the position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Fife managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Newman.
A lull in the action here. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Fife is not content to let Newman control the position.
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Salvador Newman. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Newman, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent.
