PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Matt Curran (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Adem Ozdemir (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Curran comes to the cage accompanied by Shock The World. Matt Curran has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Matt Curran!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Adem Ozdemir!
The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Bruno Hogan and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Curran with a jab.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Curran.
A head kick misses from Curran.

Ozdemir scores with a takedown into Curran's guard.
Ozdemir stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Curran swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Curran is breathing heavily.

Ozdemir decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Curran stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Curran wants it to stay on the feet.

Ozdemir shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Ozdemir drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Ozdemir jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Ozdemir accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Ozdemir postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Curran might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Curran is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Ozdemir wants to pass the guard but Curran is keeping the position.
Ozdemir throws a big right hand that misses.

Ozdemir passes easily into side control. Nice work.

Ozdemir has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Ozdemir feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Ozdemir wants to pass the guard but Curran is keeping the position.

Ozdemir stands and steps away. Curran gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Ozdemir feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Ozdemir has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Curran throws a left and a right that both miss

and Ozdemir counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Curran's guard now.
Curran can't keep his opponent in guard - Ozdemir advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Ozdemir decides to stand up.
Ozdemir shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Curran sprawls well. Curran wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Ozdemir gets slowly back to his feet.
Ozdemir tries to clinch up but Curran circles away and keeps his distance.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Ozdemir tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Curran manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Ozdemir fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Curran, pushing him back against the cage.
Ozdemir lands with a right to the head.
Ozdemir drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Matt Curran has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Adem Ozdemir.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Ozdemir escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Curran throws a combination that misses
and Ozdemir counters with a nice uppercut.
Ozdemir is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Ozdemir throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Adem Ozdemir dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Curran leaves Ozdemir with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Ozdemir closes the distance and clinches.
Curran tries to circle away but Ozdemir has him pinned against the cage.
Ozdemir jumps guard but Curran stands there with Ozdemir around his waist. Ozdemir gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Ozdemir blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Curran can't break the clinch.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Curran has had enough of the clinch but Ozdemir keeps him there for the moment.
Curran looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Curran tries to circle away but Ozdemir has him pinned against the cage.

Curran has a couple of punches blocked by Ozdemir.
Come on Curran - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Curran wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Ozdemir has him pressed against the cage.
Ozdemir lands with a right to the head.
Curran tries to work over Ozdemir's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Ozdemir lands an elbow inside.

Ozdemir escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Ozdemir closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Curran to the mat! Curran manages to get full guard.

Ozdemir stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Ozdemir closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Curran tries to bench press Ozdemir off him but Ozdemir keeps the position.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Ozdemir thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Ozdemir has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Ozdemir shoots in looking for a takedown but Curran manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Ozdemir's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Matt Curran seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Ozdemir throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Curran tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Ozdemir is in Curran's guard.

Adem Ozdemir showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Ozdemir ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Ozdemir no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Curran wanted to stand there but Ozdemir had control of the position.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Adem Ozdemir hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Ozdemir is defended easily by Curran.
Curran stuffs the takedown attempt from Ozdemir. Ozdemir gets slowly back to his feet.
Matt Curran has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Adem Ozdemir.
Curran goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.

Curran tries to sprawl but Ozdemir drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Ozdemir is looking for a kimura but Curran is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Ozdemir to get the leverage.

Ozdemir stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Curran to get to his feet.
Ozdemir will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Curran fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Ozdemir avoids it really well and circles away.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Ozdemir.

Adem Ozdemir comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Ozdemir has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
