PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Brad Barnes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Marcus Monk (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Barnes comes into the arena with Red Right Hand - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds blaring out of the sound system. Monk has chosen Master P - Heaven For A Gangsta as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 31 - 22 - 2, fighting out of Helsinki, Brad Barnes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 7 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Marcus Monk!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice jab there from Monk.
Barnes throws a leg kick but Monk checks it.
Barnes throws a hook but Monk blocks it.
Barnes throws a head kick but Monk moves out of range.
Monk scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
The fight stays on the outside here - Barnes looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Barnes doesn't manage to clinch there - Monk circles away.
Barnes checks a low kick from Monk.
Barnes scores with a shot to the body.
Monk cracks a nice hook into Barnes's ribs.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Barnes checks a leg kick.
Barnes throws a half hearted mid kick.
Monk looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Barnes misses with a right hand

and Monk counters with a takedown into side control.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Both fighters take a look at the clock.

Barnes sneaks back into half guard.
Barnes wants to control but Monk is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Monk sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Barnes defending well though.
Barnes is trying to get back to full guard.
Barnes gets full guard.
Monk wants to control from the top but Barnes keeps moving.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Monk sitting in guard here, content to control.
Barnes knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Monk on the ground.

Barnes is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Monk is aware though and is defending well.

Barnes is looking to stand up but Monk isn't so interested in that idea.
Monk not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Monk throws a big elbow that misses.
Monk with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Barnes looking for a sweep. Not yet Barnes, not yet.
Monk showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Barnes keeping moving, preventing Monk from controlling successfully.
Monk slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Barnes on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Barnes tries to get out of the position.
Monk throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Barnes is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Monk is controlling him.
Monk is looking to work some ground and pound but Barnes has wrist control.
Barnes not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Barnes can't keep his opponent in guard - Monk advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Monk is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Barnes is just riding it out for now. Monk eventually gives up the hold.
Barnes is trying to stand.

Barnes tries to get to full guard but Monk has control of the leg.
Monk missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Barnes is trying to stand.
Monk has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Monk is working for a submission of some sort.
Barnes keeps control of the position for the meantime.
Barnes is looking for a sweep. Monk is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Marcus Monk dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Monk dives in and scores a takedown into Barnes's guard.
Monk postures up and lands a big shot to Barnes's brow.
Barnes not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Barnes looking to hit a scissor sweep but Monk is one step ahead there.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Monk accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Barnes is looking to sweep but instead, Monk has passed into half guard.
Barnes is trying to get back to full guard.
Barnes wants to stand back up but Monk manages to pass into side control.
Monk scores with a couple of short elbows.
Barnes wants to get back to his feet but Monk drags him back down.

Monk passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Barnes!

Monk scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Barnes?
Barnes wants to control but Monk is having none of it.
Monk pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

Monk prevents Barnes from getting the reversal.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Monk wants to finish this one by submission but Barnes is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Monk.
BOOM! Monk connects with a massive shot to the dome!

Monk raining down shots from the mount!
Monk sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Monk avoids the attempt from Barnes to control.
Monk with a couple of short strikes.
Monk breaks from Barnes's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Monk lands a big shot there that rocks Barnes but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.


Barnes is rocked!
Monk prevents Barnes from getting the reversal.
Oh Barnes is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!

Barnes tries to reverse the position but Monk maintains control.
Barnes tries to hold on but Monk postures up.
Monk is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Barnes wants to control but Monk is having none of it.
Barnes seems to have got his legs back now.
Barnes keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Monk scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Barnes wants to get back to his feet.

Monk goes for an armbar but Barnes turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Barnes.

Barnes tries to stand but Monk is controlling from the bottom.
Monk manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Barnes manages to get himself to full guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Monk loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Monk wants to pass the guard but Barnes is keeping the position.
Barnes wants to stand and escape but Monk is having none of it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Marcus Monk showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. And we move into the final round!


Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Barnes lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Monk has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Monk and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
A nice leg kick lands there from Barnes.
Monk misses the jab.
Barnes waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Monk.
Barnes throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Monk slips a straight right by Barnes.
Monk checks a leg kick nicely.
Monk takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Barnes doesn't manage to clinch there - Monk circles away.
Barnes avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Barnes stuns Monk with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Brad Barnes seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Barnes checks the leg kick.
Monk is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Barnes.
Barnes on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Monk. Monk obviously looking to wear him down.

Barnes misses with a wild combination.
Barnes drops his hands momentarily and Monk takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Barnes misses with a straight left.

Monk shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Monk was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Monk looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Monk with shots to the head and body - Barnes looks very uncomfortable down there.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Barnes is in a horrible position here. Monk smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Monk trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Barnes is desperately trying to improve his position but Monk has a good base and remains in mount.

Monk has control of Barnes's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Barnes regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Monk lands a nice shot to the head.
Monk avoids the attempt from Barnes to control.

Monk has hold of Barnes's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Barnes manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Brad Barnes has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Barnes is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.
Monk content just to control the position here.

Marcus Monk comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Monk winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Marcus Monk decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little.
