PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Aneurin Glyndwr (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gunnar Horvat (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gunnar Horvat will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Aneurin Glyndwr!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Gunnar Horvat!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Colin Fray and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Horvat keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Horvat is looking to slow Glyndwr down with leg kicks.
Horvat throws a head kick that misses.
Horvat turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Glyndwr finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
A shot to the liver by Horvat. Beautiful body shot.

Horvat dives in and scores a takedown into Glyndwr's guard.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Glyndwr looking for a sweep. Not yet Glyndwr, not yet.
Horvat tries to free his leg and advance position but Glyndwr is retaining full guard.
Glyndwr utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Horvat wants to control from the top but Glyndwr keeps moving.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Glyndwr working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Horvat.
Glyndwr wants to stand but Horvat is controlling the position.
Horvat wants to control from the top but Glyndwr keeps moving.

Gunnar Horvat has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Glyndwr clinches with his opponent.
A right hook to the body lands for Horvat.
Horvat avoiding damage.
Horvat gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Glyndwr.

Good anti-grappling being displayed by Glyndwr as Horvat tries to tie him up.
Horvat dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the cage.
Glyndwr goes for a takedown in the clinch but Horvat prevents it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Aneurin Glyndwr. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Glyndwr has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Horvat is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Horvat lands with a light punch inside.
Horvat scores with a hook to the body.
Horvat working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely.
Glyndwr goes for a takedown attempt but Horvat pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

and Horvat counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Glyndwr throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Horvat's waist but Horvat gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Glyndwr off to one side.

Glyndwr gets a clinch.
Glyndwr drops down looking for an ankle pick but Horvat pulls his leg out and moves away.
Glyndwr is breathing heavily.

Horvat shoots in and bounces Glyndwr off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Horvat is pushing down on Glyndwr's leg trying to pass to half guard. Glyndwr is fighting to maintain full guard but Horvat has managed to sneak the leg through.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Glyndwr keeps control of the position for the meantime.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Horvat connects with a nice short shot to Glyndwr's temple.
Horvat winds up and cracks Glyndwr with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
This has been an exciting period of action!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Horvat is looking for a kimura but Glyndwr is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Horvat to get the leverage.

Horvat wants to work for an arm triangle but Glyndwr is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gunnar Horvat dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Glyndwr gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Horvat jabs Glyndwr to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Horvat digs a good hook to Glyndwr's body.
Horvat lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Glyndwr at a distance.

Glyndwr clinches with his opponent.
Horvat struggles to land a body shot inside as Glyndwr controls his hands.

Horvat has picked Glyndwr up - he's going for a ride! Horvat dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
Horvat thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Glyndwr's head.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Horvat drops an elbow to the side of Glyndwr's head.
Horvat seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Horvat working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Horvat not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Horvat is trying to control. Glyndwr wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Horvat scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Horvat is taking a breather. Glyndwr says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Horvat missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Glyndwr knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Horvat on the ground.
Horvat wants to control but Glyndwr is keeping him busy.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Horvat frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Horvat throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Horvat trying to control but Glyndwr is having none of it.
Horvat lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.

Horvat postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Glyndwr looks a forlorn figure.
Horvat has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Glyndwr is wriggling around trying to escape.
Glyndwr holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Horvat tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Gunnar Horvat showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Glyndwr dives in and grabs Horvat's left leg, looking for a takedown. Horvat pushes down on Glyndwr's head and hops out.

Glyndwr has Horvat up against the cage in a clinch.
Horvat lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.
Horvat lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
Horvat lands with a right to the head.

Horvat has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Glyndwr regains guard immediately.
Horvat forces his way into half guard.
Glyndwr might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Horvat trying to mount his opponent but Glyndwr defends it.
Horvat uses his free foot to push down on Glyndwr's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Glyndwr.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Horvat landing punches.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Horvat cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Horvat looking to secure an arm triangle but Glyndwr defends it well.
Horvat throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Horvat has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Glyndwr wants to hold on but Horvat pushes him away.

Horvat looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.

Horvat has control of Glyndwr's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Glyndwr regains control of the situation pretty easily.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Horvat looking to control but Glyndwr is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Horvat lands a big shot there that rocks Glyndwr but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

Horvat lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Glyndwr hang on?
Glyndwr is squirming around, avoiding Horvat's attempts to control the action.
Horvat with shots to the head and body - Glyndwr looks very uncomfortable down there.

Horvat working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Glyndwr looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Horvat! Submission of the night perhaps?

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:22 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Gunnar Horvat!
During a confident post fight interview, Gunnar Horvat thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
